Hi, we've had a terrible time with piggies lately- we lost Phoebe to what appeared to be diarrhoea, possibly the fact she had an enlarged heart was a contributing factor, we then lost her mum to a pyometra- she passed away the day after and emergency spay to try and save her.
Anyway, it just doesn't seem to be ending and now Nookie is unwell.
Nookie is a 5.5 year old castrated male and lives with another neutered boy called Incy. Recently Nookie has been losing weight, drinking more and the boys run seems much wetter too. I had booked him in for tomorrow, but on checking him today he had a white 'crust' round his penis, so got him in today.
I managed to collect a urine sample from him, and other than some protein it shows no other issues. The vet can find nothing obvious and he is eating well and bright.
He is booked in for blood tests and x-rays but I wondered if anybody had any ideas as to what could be wrong. I am worried it may be kidney failure.

Protein in the urine, along with the increased urination and drinking does suggest that there may be some problems with the kidneys. But this isnt a death sentence, things can be done.

Good luck

x.

I can't really tell you much more, it's good that you got him into the vet. I would separate him and Incy just in case the disease is contagious AND take Incy to the vet along with Nookie and make sure it isn't spreading. After Nookie is well I would quarintine them both for a couple days and then let them get back together again.
Good luck, and get will soon Nookie!

Hi, Thanks for the replies.
Nookie went into the vet the next day for a more thorough examination. The vets couldn't manage to get bloods but did get a pure urine sample, x-rays showed a bladder stone and some smaller ones in the ureter but all passing. There was no obvious sings of an problem with his gut and his teeth were perfect.
He is on antibiotics and I have kept them together, if it is contagious I think Incy would be showing symptoms by now, and they are happier together, but they are now in the house to keep them warmer ( they were in a run in a large shed).
The vet hopes that the urine sample with let us know what the compostion of the crystals are, if there is an infection and the specific gravity should be able to tell us if there are kidney issues. She did say that infections can spark the formation of crystals- so for now he is on baytril, fibreplex and plenty of fluids.
They all comented on what a lovely pig he is, he is a bit quieter than usual but he has always been a friendly confident little man.
I'll let you know how he gets on.

I am sorry your little one is ill. I really hope he gets better soon.

Just wanted to send some healing vibes and huggles to you and Nookie. So sorry to hear about all your losses. xx

Sorry to hear this, I'm not sure what it could be but I do hope the vet can find the problem and get him on the mend asap xx
