Hi,

Was just wondering what is normal behaviour after an neutering op & when to be concerned. They have now been home since about 3.30! George seems just cross with me :)) & fine in himself. He rumbled at me about five times once I had returned him to his cage but then proceeding to run around and jump over his food bowl. He has eaten about 5 fine beans and a piece of pepper and some natures salad treat stuff by naturals (which he came out of his house for).

Tiger is the opposite he is sat in his house and he has only eaten the 1 & 1/2 pieces of pepper and half a green bean. I put a handful of nuggets into his house and he ate one & then hunched up again. He does hold grudges a lot as will sulk with me for days after a bath or nailclipping so hoping he is just cross! I just gave him some lettuce which he completely ignored for about 5 mins until I put it to his lips and now he has munched through about 1/2 a leaf of little gem (very small though)

Should I be worried yet? I will keep trying him with lots of diff veg! I want to give him a cuddle but think he is best left alone for at least tonight and will get him out in the morning and give him a cuddle and check him over as has been a long day for him bless!
 
Most piggies are a bit grumpy or sorry for themselves after an op.

I just left them in peace; they got veg and treats, but if they didn't want to be cosseted, fine. Once they feel better, they be OK. They are just as different as we humans...
 
Aahhh, best wishes for George and Tiger. I just kept an eye on Nutty when he was done, he lost a bit of weight afterwards, but then had put it back on after about a week. I didn't attempt to pick him up as I was frightened of hurting him or popping his stitches (eek) x
 
I didn't realise they were getting neutered today, I'm glad things have gone okay thus far. If Tiger is the kind of character to hold a grudge then I would certainly expect for him to be a bit sulky after the events of today! Poor little guy.

Just make sure he's eating and drinking something, weigh both boys daily for the next few days to be sure they're recovering well. Handling kept to a minimum if possible.
 
They are both being strange now. Tiger has starting running around and he has eaten some hay which is good. George is fine but not his normal self. I suppose it is to be expected but they are being really wierd.

Tiger keeps dashing about and then sitting with his back to us outside his house for a good 5 mins not moving and george keeps jumping on his house although I removed all food from top as didn't want him to burst the glue open but he keeps jumping on! He was also sat on top of his house with his back to us for a few mins. both were facing wall so nothing of interest to look at but a red painted wall, figured maybe sulking?

George also layed spread out on top of house with his eyes closed which is so unsual as he never really does this in people's eye lines! I guess hot weather could be a factor also!
 
I thought tiger was acting suspicously yesterday! He kept standing up and looking like he was eating his poos from his bottom I told him off a couple of times as thought he might be messing. Checked him this morning and there was a small amount of blood on the fleece (luckly only about 5-10 little drops) and he has pulled out a few stiches (poor mite) He's off to the vets again at 9.30! I doubt there is a way to stop him though! I will speak to the vet and see if there is anything we can do don't suppose you can bandage down there as where would the poo go?
 
Oh silly Tiger! What are these boys like!

Bandaging is not possible, as you say. There's really not much you can do, the vet may put a layer of "glue" on to hold the stitches in. Ideally you'd want something that tastes bitter to prevent him licking/biting at the stitches but I'd be very iffy on the safety of using anything like that on a wound.
 
The running can be due to Tiger wanting to escape the discomfort - if I remember correctly, my first own boy did the same a looooong time back.

But poor Tiger - naughty! He so wants to be rid of it! All the best with your visit to the vets.
 
I think I was just being a bit overreacting! better safe than sorry though! Took him to the vets and the mysterious string which was hanging down disappeared so think it was a string off the fleece :)) Also there was only a bit of blood and he was all held together fine. The vet said it was probably just that he nibbled the glue a bit and he didn't charge me for the visit. Glad I had him checked though as would have been worried.

Both seem good this evening they are both eating normal amounts and both even reacted to the fridge door tonight which they didn't yesterday or this morning!
 
They should revive by tomorrow - it usually takes about two days after an op for them to feel more like themselves and be ready for life again!

I'm happy that Tiger was OK - better be safe than sorry! Nice of your vet not to charge!
 
Just to let you know that they are both now doing well. They went for their post op checkup on Thursday and other than a few nibbles around the area they are fine. They don't seem to be saw any more as the nurse was poking them and they are eating quite well now. George is back to his old trick of jumping onto his nero house instead of using the stairs and Tiger even seemed to enjoy a cuddle last night which is not normally like him!
 
George has started acting a bit wierd and I'm getting slightly worried about him now. Firstly he had longish hair around his bum and I noticed a few days after the op it was slightly shorter on top and I presumed that the vets snipped it. I thought this was strange at the time as wasn't really long enough to come near his balls but just thought well I don't know I'm not a vet.

Anyway I may be paranoid but today it seemed even shorter and kind of more jagged and uneven at the back and I am wondering if he has been nibbling it. He has also started shouting like he is hurt when he clearly isn't. For example today I put my hand in his cage and gave him a gentle stroke on his head and he shouted like the high pitched noise he does when I clip his nails (which also doesn't hurt). I got him out a bit later to check his bits and he again shouted. I was not touching any sore places at the time (i doubt he is still sore anyway) I was just holding him on his back for a few seconds whilst I had a peek!

He is also still not eating as much as normal and his poos are still not back to full size although they are the correct shape and consistancy!
 
Sorry to be a nuisance just remembered to ask something else. George decided on way home from vets to climb under the fleece and do a massive wee and soak the whole thing up using his tummy. He now stinks to high heaven of stale wee! His greece gland is gross too! As soon as there are no scabs etc.. am I safe to bath him? Don't want to do it yet as he still has a small scab where he had a little nibble shortly after the op!
 
Guinea pigs can squeal quite dramatically with a remembered hurt, so George is probably just carrying on.

Never heard the one with the bum barbering, but it could wbe that he hurts down there and is trying to get at it.

It can take some time to get back to full weight. If you are worried, perhaps you can supplement his diet with a probiotic to stimulate his appetite?

Hopefully, he's feeling his old self again soon!

Now we are nearly at two weeks post-op and tiger is back to normal and george seems like something is wrong. He is still not back to his normal eating me out of house& home and is still hardly eating any nuggets (maybe 10-15gms a day) & he has started squeeking. I'm not sure if it is when he wees / poos or not I can't seem to catch him doing it but it does sound like he is in pain or uncomfortable for some reason. He has taken to hiding in his house the majority of the time and getting little exercise!

I had a weigh in this evening and he is still loosing a small amount of weight. I know that is not worrying in itself but when compared to Tiger who is a simular age you can see why I'm concerned. Below is a table which should hopefully explain what I mean.

As you can see Tiger is putting weight on again and is now heavier than prior to neutering. George has only lost 35gms but he is at the growing age and should be still gaining!
 
It was two weeks before Nutty started gaining weight after his op. He either maintained or lost a bit. Can you cut any grass and give them piles of that, (if they can't go out) I did find that this helped. xx
 
Yes they had some today will keep giving it them! Think George may have mites again through all the upset as noticed huge chunks of dandruff just before!

I had him out before as heard him squeeking he sounds like a puppy crying. Gave him a cuddle and he had a little lettuce then wee'd all down my legs gushes of it! He has not done that since he was a baby.

He is now squeeking in his cage again and backing up like he is trying to poo / wee I'm very worried! I've noticed his cage is very smelly too I have had to clean him out more frequent than tiger this week but put it down to him being more smelly and not noticing as he is normally on megazorb! Now I think it is because something is wrong. He still looks a bit swollen on one side so I am quite worried.

I think vets are in order tomorrow morning
 
My Toddie lost weight post neuter, he took about 3wks before he started to gain it back & has continually gained since. :)
 
Ok so george definately has a wee / poo problem but not sure which. I have just witnessed the full on performance. First he sits and starts to squeek for a bit like he is trying to either wee or poo. then he arches his back and sticks his bum in the air & lets out a really loud squeek and then it's over. He has specific places where he wee/poos so can't tell which one he is doing as there is usually a pile where he goes!

Good news is that I cleaned him out last night and there are plenty of poos around so he is not completely constipated if it is infact a poo and not a wee problem!

He will go to vets tomorrow but any tips on what I should encourage him to eat would be good. Any natural herbs etc...
 
Well he still seems not right this morning. I have given him veggies which he hasn't touched even when I put one next to him. He totally ignored his carrot aswell last night which is his favourite at the minute!

I have put a pile of hay from his hayrack infront of him and he is munching away. Last night I put some nuggets in front of him and he ate a couple but hasn't really bothered eating much yesterday or this morning that i haven't stuck directly in his face!

Vets open at 8.30 so waiting to ring and get an appointment! fingers crossed some antibotics will fix him and possibly another course of mite treatment. It's so worrying having piggies I dread to think what it would be like to have a baby :))
 
Well been upstairs for over half hour now and gone back down and he is layed spread out in same place I left him. He didn't even bother to get up and either chase me or run off as I walked past. He never stays still when I go past!
 
Oh well the vet says "probably nothing to do with the castration" but have an appointment this afternoon! Will let you know how it goes!
 
It is amusing how medical professionals can claim that prior to any examination of the patient! It happened with the twins (human) when they were 12 weeks old. They were both given a double dose of their second vaccinations (student nurse got the dose wrong), the next day Daniel had a sky-high temperature and the first thing the nurse said when we took him in was "It is nothing to do with the vaccinations!".

Hope all goes well with him, best to have him checked as it is not usually normal for pigs to refuse veg!

He is now on baytrill as suspected urinary infection "nothing to do with the neutering" and just a coincidence. Vet squeezed his penis and a little bit of thick also yellowish liquid came out. He said I've heard that is normal sometimes for guinea pigs. I was like is it? He said has he ever had wee like that & I was NO!

After that came a diagnosis, I think intially he was going to say he was fine but then must have realised I wasn't going to be happy with that answer!
 
Oh! how do I give probotic? I bought some to stop baytril upsetting him. It states a scoop per 200ml does that mean I put it in the bottle? George hardly drinks anything so not sure how much that will help!

No definitely not in the bottle, you wont know how much he has had, and if he is hardly drinking, it wouldn't be enough to do any good anyway. I mix 100ml at a time and keep it covered and use bit by bit. Syringe if you can, paste off a teaspoon? Which ever way he will take it really. x
 
Just caught up with this thread - poor George, really hope he's on the mend soon.

I would mix up the probiotic as per instructions and syringe it into him. I cant understand why vets say to put it in the water bottle as piggies seldom drink if they're feeling unwell rolleyes

vet didn't mention to give him any. Got it from P@H as completely forgot to ask for any at the vets as was a bit stressed out as was very late for getting back to work! I will mix it and then syringe it. How much shall I give him?
