My pigs are 2 males around 17 weeks old and I weigh them regularly to check they're growing as they should. One of them is around 860g and the other is around 810g. I think they are the same age (we were told they were both around 7 weeks when we got them), I'm not sure if they're the same litter or not.
Is it normal for pigs to vary in weights from those the same age and sex?
I know they both feed well and it is actually non-dominant piggy that's the bigger one so nothing going on with regards to dominant one eating all the food.

Yes entirely normal

My two are not related, their diet is obviously the same but their weights are very different - one averaging 1250g and the other 1500g

As long as each piggy gains weight well and is healthy for themselves (heft), then that it’s fine.

That's good news. Would you say their weights are healthy? One of them feels massive compared to the other when you cuddle him 🤣

Hi!

Please have a read of chapter 3 about feeling for the 'heft'; i.e. working out whether your piggies are a good weight for their size or whether they are overweight. You always do this around the ribcage.

Normal adult guinea pig sizes can vary enormously (actually much more than cited in the vet literature), even amongst litter sibling. Over the years, I've had piggies who were bordering on overweight at just over 800g and a large boar who was still feeling a bit skinny at 1400-1500g. We can't tell you whether your piggies are playing in the right ball park just from the weight alone.

Here is the guide link with the practical instruction and also information on how to best deal with any potentially life-shortening overweight. Please take the time to read it. You should find it both helpful and interesting!

Yes, it's quite normal... there's a wide range of 'normal' weights for pigs. I've had some that topped three pounds and some that never hit two pounds, all healthy, just very different bone structures/body types!

As others have said, this is definitely normal! We have a boar who is 1300g and one who is 800g, with two others in between. Both of them fit their body type pretty well, which is what’s really important. They’re just like humans in that weight looks and feels different on every different body.

Aww that's a relief! Yes I think Picchu is just a bigger boy than Machu but they're both happy and healthy and that's all that matters I guess 🥰

Also, I should add: our one pig who is just over 900g eats the most out of our four boys. He, quite literally, never. stops. eating. 😂 They’re strange little creatures!
