Normal teeth?

Does any one have photos or links to what normal healthy guinea pig teeth look like?

I suspect that Dexter (who died at the weekend) had over grown teeth. The vet checked them and thought they were fine, but she had to compare them to our other pigs teeth as a reference to what normal was. I had thought the front one looked over grown, but these are my first pigs and I'm not sure what healthy normal ones look like!

Looking online, I can't see any clear pics of what they should look like.

Given what happened with Dexter and that Splat's teeth are similar, I'm worried incase her teeth might start causing her trouble in the near future.
 
i've (touch wood) never had problems with piggy teeth, all i can suggest is make sure they have plenty of hay and wood, gnaw stone's and harder veg and stuff to keep them down as much as possible. sorry i can't be more help, good luck x
 
I'm pretty sure that Suzygpr is a dental expert, so she will know.

Bit concerning that your vet didnt know what normal was though!:(

The vet where I got Jeff from, wrote in his notes that he'd lost his canine teeth - yeah, just like every other guinea pig in the world, a long time ago in their evolution somewhere! rolleyes

Youre joking!

It just goes to prove how important it is to take these guys to a cavy savvy vet, it can make the difference between life and death!

Not joking at all. She also did her initial dental exam without even opening his mouth. Needless to say, I didn't take him back for his post op check (instead of castrating him, they butchered him!) and took him straight to my vet! :x
 
Thanks. They get constant supply of hay and plenty of veg. :)
Still no idea what normal teeth should look like though!
 
what a useless vet! you'd think with guinea pigs being such a popular pet they'd at least have basic knowlege! x
 
Sometimes, slightley over grown teeth can be a sign that a guinea pig is dying, as that is what happened with one of mine.:...
