Hey guys! So shaggy has been having a hard month..He has gotten over his URI he had for 2 weeks last week that stopped his vitamin c uptake and made him hop around not want to jump off things and loose both his top teeth from scurvy! He has gotten walking/running again and his teeth are grown back to normal from his baytril treatment from the vet. The few days after his uri went away we noticed his nose crust starting to come back strong, we brushed it off as his semen when he cleans himself stuck on his face at first because when we removed it the first time he was having it it just came off fairly easy when wetted and he wasn't in pain really. This time it was starting to crack his skin under nose and we saw blood when removing it not bleeding just blood under the scab. We took him to the vet in town that is open on weekend as our main vet isn't on the weekend and he checked him with no definitive answer and gave him silver sulfadiazine and some other things for his pain/digestion even though I mentioned nystatin I has researched before for chelatis that looks close. The cracked skin has gone no more visible bleeding but it's not getting that much better a week later, maybe scabs are removing slightly easier if that. He said that it might be a skin infection but also said he really has no clue what it was and never seen it before :| we wanted another doc to check his nose as our main vet never said anything when he had it first time few months back when we went in for uri last time but we forgot to ask about it..but I think I payed 180 in meds and new vet visit I think I'm just going to just call my normal vet today and set an appointment to have them fix this like they fixed the uri, if they even seen it before.

Also there is this weird flaking crust that doesn't scratch off on his ears, seems to be a little bigger, possibly another sign of skin infection? Just looking for some extra Guinea savvy eyes to check shaggys problems :\
Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the Forum.
:wel:

Your poor boy - it sounds like he has had a rough couple of weeks.

I am not an expert, but the sores on his mouth look like chelitis, which can be from a bacterial, viral or fungal infection as well as from eating too much acidic fruit.
There is more information here;
Guinea Lynx :: Cheilitis

It can be very painful, so please do not try to clean or brush the sores off his mouth.
He also needs to see a vet for proper treatment.
It does sound like the weekend vet you saw didn't know much about guinea pigs, so it would be best to take him back to your regular vet if you feel they have more experience with guinea pigs.

Or if you update your profile to let us know roughly where you live, members on here might be able to recommend a good vet you could see with him.

Good luck sorting it all out - he looks like a very sweet piggie.

Hi and welcome

Your piggy has got cheilitis, lip infection. Please see a vet for it. Yours looks rather well developed, so he really needs proper treatment! Scurvy may have contributed to the development of it. Please stop feeding any fresh fruit and tomatoes. Guinea Lynx :: Cheilitis

It also looks rather like he has got a fungal ear. Guinea Lynx :: Fungus
