Hi everyone!

I have a guinea pig named Kaia. We adopted her as a baby and have had her almost two years. She seems to have nose conjestion. Initially she came down with an eye infection, I took her to the vet, got terramyecin, which cleared it up quickly. About a week later we noticed some clear nostril discharge. I took her to the vet again and they said that her lungs sounded fine, but prescribed her Orbax to treat any sort of infection that might be going on. She is on her last dose of it, but the nostril congestion is still going on. I don’t hear it from her if she is sitting still or sleeping. If she is running about her cage or I pick her up I hear this conjestion and she will breath more quickly than usual. I would say maybe she has hay dust stuck in her nose but this has been going on for about a week. I would think it would’ve cleared by now. She is currently quarantined from her cage mates and they show no signs of illness. Despite her conjestion she is acting completely normal eating, drinking and pooping just fine. She was rescued from a rough environment and is very timid and skidish. Does anyone have any advice? Could it be a panic attack? Do guinea pigs get allergies? I have spent so much money, but haven’t gotten answers on what is actually going on. Has anyone else experienced this in there piggies?

I should also say that since she went to the vet and got the orbax, she hasn’t had anymore nostril discharge

Will wait for a health and illness guru to answer your reply. Does Wiebke's answer in this thread help?

Hi!

Guinea pig airways are very narrow. they can also not breathe through the mouth. That means that any little obstruction from the airways, like from hay dust or pollen or if something goes up the nose from greedy eating/bad medicating or syringe feeding is always very audible.
Hooting is in the vast majority of cases a minor blockage in the nose. Clear watery discharge and sneezing are generally there to remove any irritation from the nose. A guinea pig will also sneeze several times a day when it gives itself a 'piggy wash' to clear the airways.

You should go on alert with any crackling or rasping from lower down in the airways and see a vey promptly if it isn't cleared with a little cough.
