I am really pleased because I have just come across a fantastic guinea pig breeder. :(|) The reason I'm so pleased is because recently I've been hearing about bad breeders and I feel awful that I can't help the guinea pigs. :( However, when trying to find a picture of a certain piggy breed I came across the breeder's site. I'm not getting one but just thought I'd share that not all breeders are bad out there. :)

The set-up is amazing! A massive shed, half for girls, half for boys, there's loads of tunnels, toys and hidie places and large hutches for the pregnant piggies. She has large runs on the grass and her policies are great. It even says this!

NOTE -- Sales of animals will be stopped around the christmas period!
(so that no guinea pigs will just be bought for Christmas and then get forgotten about)
And this:

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE OUR GUINEA PIGS SOLD AS COMPANIONS FOR RABBITS! SORRY.
We are willing to home our furry babies to novice pig keepers, we actively encourage people to have guinea pigs as pets, as they are so very rewarding. BUT, we do like people to do their research before getting a pig, as they do have their specific requirements.
If for what ever reason you find yourself not able to keep your pigs, we insist that you contact us before rehoming the pigs to someone else. We will gladly take back pigs (room permitting) and we dont like them to be passed around.

It just made my day to come across such a fantastic breeder. If all were like this, then no piggies would get neglected and need to be rescued. :)

Even the five freedoms are on the site!

1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst - by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour.

2. Freedom from Discomfort - by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.

3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease - by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.

4. Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour - by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind.

5. Freedom from Fear and Distress - by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.

I just wish more breeders were like that - it's such a shame that we get confronted with the consquences of the other kind so much...

I agree that this breeder does sound more responsible than most, but sadly the better start they will have in this case does not mean they will all end up in perfect homes and be cared for correctly just because they advise on research does not guarantee better piggy parents.

The fact they take back piggies is responsbile but sadly some people that mistreat their animals are either in denial or darm right cruel so these piggies may not be returned.

I would agree that although the breeders ideal buyer may be clearly indicated on their site they still have no idea where the animals are going to end up, still irresponsible in my book.

That's great. :) I know some good breeders like that and think it's so good that people have an option to go to them instead of a pet shop.

I don't understand why bad breeders even breed guinea pigs, I wouldn't have thought there was much profit in it, but maybe there is if you don't look after them properly rolleyes

It is lovely to see that they care about the piggies, and give them a comfortable living and start in life, but its still such a shame to breed them knowingly when their is a lot of piggies out there needing homes - though i know you can never stop this when moneys always involved! :(

I think some people just breed for fun / the love of raising baby pigs and providing pets to people. It is a shame when there are lots of ones in rescue though . . .

Aye i just dont like the idea of breeding to such large scales as some do, but it is lovely that the breeder mentioned takes good care of their piggies and they are obviously well loved and looked after and have a brilliant start to their lives :)

i talk to a breeder and she breeds hers and keeps them all, all her piggies are fantasticly looked after I was amazed at her set ups she had the bigest shed I had ever seen it was like a mini house with central heating runs evrything made me rather jealous ") They are not all bad! I do know of someone that breeds for P@H rabbits that is and his set ups are fantastic too xx

Yes :) and she also will only rehome guinea pigs in pairs or groups or to live with guinea pigs a person already has. :(|) I'm not saying don't rescue! That should always come first, this thread is just to show that there are some wonderful people out there who breed as well as the bad.
