Hi all, I am new here so please be gentle :-) I am seeking help advice as I'm not coping with my piggies well. I have six boars in three pairs. Two of which I think have started fighting a bit. They are large beautiful boys some long haired so curly haired but my circumstances have changed and have health issues and am working full time with 3 children.
Time is a problem and I have no wheelie bin space for the litter/hay. They need bathing and trimming too and its not happening. I think the fairest thing is to try to find some of them new homes but I don't want the boys to suffer or go to worse homes.
Any advice?

I'm also pretty new here so my advice is limited. But I just wanted to say good on you for being brave enough to admit when you need some help. Much better to be honest and admit that perhaps your piggies would be better suited to a different home, it's a hard thing to do. I hope others have some good advice for you and your situation is sorted as hassle free as possible x

I have several boars, a couple of children and a job and so I recognise your situation! Most of mine are not long haired though.
It might be worth talking to your nearest rescue (see rescue locator) just for advice initially. Do you have an idea of what would be manageable for you? Could your children help you more or are they young ones?
If you do decide that you need help to rehome any of your boys, a good rescue will home check where they are going and check that the new home can cope with the extra grooming etc. You are being responsible by thinking about what is best for your gps so no one should knock you for that

Welcome to the forum.

There's no shame in admitting things seem a bit much for you. 6 piggies in 3 pairs is a lot of work. And long hair is extra work. If you are thinking of rehoming please consider putting a post in our re-homing section with a photo and info. Another member may be interested. Otherwise please only surrender to a reputable rescue who can ensure they get good forever homes.

Thank you all. Its a tough thing to contemplate. The children are older and don't want me to rehome them but they are not being responsible so I need to decide what is best for the animals. Its very hard as I care about them. I will put some pics on the rehome section when I get the chance to take some nice ones. It would be easier to let them go to someone who really loved guinea pigs. Thank you again.

Hi have six boars they can be hard work Hun when working full time can you not bath a couple at a time I do it be a shame to have to rehome them or maybe just keep three and rehome the others I know it be tough decision but don't be afraid to admit your not coping your thinking of the welfare of the piggies there are many ppl that would not care Hun hope you get on okay

I have six boars and three sows, but I don't have young kids, my son is 22 and helps a fair bit.

You wouldn't be able to put them in three's sadly, apparently it hardly ever works out. I would do what eases the load for you, rehome maybe four and keep two (or whatever you feel you can manage) or ask your children if they'd be willing to help out with the boars.

Really you need to do what is right for you and the guinea's.

I hope you find a solution.

Hi
You could try contacting Tracey at Yate small animal rescue and rehome and see if she had space to take in any.

Do what is truly best if you do need to regime you can post on here or go through a rescue as they often do home checks and will make sure they get loving new homes. Good luck!

I have a pair I could rehome together. They get on really well and are my favourite but not personally "owned" by the kids. They came from a neighbour and their dad was a Swiss so they are large. One (Ginger) is the most laid back sweetest little guy. His brother (Marshmallow) is lovely too and you can see the Swiss in him. I then have another pair who have just fallen out. One will have to stay (Bubble) or my daughter would never forgive me. The other (Oreo) could go to live with a sow I guess. This one is bossy. It would help the family stress levels and they are not getting the care they need. Its difficult because we can't fit the litter/hay in the wheelie bin and so have to take it to the tip which we haven't time for. The children promise to help and then don't. It's stressful. Thank you chatting it over.

Good luck and don't feel awkward etc. 6 boars is alot of work. I only have two and that's enough work due to their extra little needs being skinnies!

I hope you find homes for them and wishing you all the best.

Hope you get your situation sorted. I know what you mean about the bins with sawdust and everything, once I had owned my boys for a couple of months and was fed up with the mess and everything I decided to buy a C&C cage and put them on fleece, amazingly easy, clean and quick..... could that be an option for you? It literally takes me about 40 seconds to pick the blanket up, shake poo off! I change the blankets every 5 day and do a full disenfectant clean every 10 days?

Thank for this idea. What could I put under there which wouldn't smell or fill the bin up?! I usually have them in the conservatory during the winter and outside in the summer. But I'm open to ideas. The hay seems to spread over the whole room when they are indoors!
I gave some of the baths and cuddles tonight and they were very sweet.

I use on the very bottom waterproof bed sheets then towels then fleece blankets! Their hay is in a little hay rack but I keep a soft brush and just brush them off before putting them in the washing machine. It is so quick and easy, there isnt anything to go in the bin, i chuck the poo over the garden, as soon as the lawn mower comes out its gone and its no different to them being in the run on the grass, its quicker to clean them than the rabbit hutch or my hamster cage, its really simple, if it was any good for bunnies I would have them on fleece too lol!

I use vet bed and pvc terry towelling mattress protectors underneath to absorb the pee it much easier works wonders

As much as I'd love to I don't have room for 3 or 4 cages big enough for boars inside. Two of my children are also allergic to hay which becomes a problem when they are indoors.
I feel upset as I can't see a good solution.

@Wiltshirepiggs my lot live outside, and i have 2 rabbits aswel. our non recyclable bin gets emptied every fortnight, so you can imagine after full clean each week the bin would be full, and dad would have to take me to tip to get rid of. Any way I've since switched to fleece and am so glad i did, i sweep out every day and still do full clean end of each week and its so much easier then wood chips.
Under the fleece i use puppy training pads, then newspaper and then the fleece.
A lady i know makes various fleece items and the quality is great:Snoozie's Cozies

Hi thank you. This is interesting :-) I didn't realise you could use fleece outside. Do you use wooden hutches?

yep all wooden hutches, they coped fine in winter on fleece too as provided plenty of hay, gave them hides stuffed with hay and their heat pads, plus all hutches are covered at night with tarp so keeps everyone dry and warm :)
