I have posted about big mamma emergency spay but now 1 week on she isnt eatin her food on her own or enough.

If i bring her out the age she will eat on her own but when in her cage bery little. She is loosing some weifht about 10g -20g a day..

Today is her last day for her meds...
Baytril, metacam, zantac. I'm hoping after today's baytril she will be eating back to her normal self.

When she isn't eating herself is she telling me she wants to give up :(....

She seems to just be sitting in her hidy hut until i bring her out and she is a different guinea pig.. I'm at a loss if what to do...

Please contact your vet and have her seen promptly!

Glad you have an appointment booked, this is not normal after a spay. Is it possible to get her seen today or is that out of the question?

I cant get any time off work. I can see if there is any cancellations tonight.

Managed to get a cancellation at the vet yesterday.

Big mamma has been prescribed more metacam and zantac..

The vet said she is pleased with were she is up to at the moment as it was a tough op due to so much gas in her.

She has surprised me last night and ate a few pellets all on her own. And this morning ate red pepper and green beans for the first time in a week. The vet weighed her and she has actually put weight on.

Need new scales i think:hmm:

Onwards and upwards i hope :)

Come on Big Mamma!!

That all sounds more positive, especially that she has eaten. It is most likely the gas then that is causing her issues and not the spay itself. I hope the meds help. You could also try sitting her on something that vibrates to help shift the gas. Woodwards gripe water can help too.

:agr: with Helen. All sounds more positive. I would give her some gripe water, too and perhaps try to massage he tummy a little (but be gentle as she's had surgery) to help break up gas. Please let us know how she gets on.

The gripe water made a big difference with my baby. I bet if I had done it sooner she would have pulled through :(

I have been giving her infocol (advised by the vets). Do is gripe water better than infocol?

I have been away for the weekend and left her with mum and dad. they have been stars.

She is being more active and nosing around her cage still not eating her pellets as much as i would like but she is maintaining her weight.

But she is still munching on some veggies not all and still have to waft the smell of some veggies under her nose for some interest.

But its looking more positive.

Hi,

It does not really matter what she is eating just that she is so keep tempting her with anything and everything until she starts to pick up and is eating normally again.

Keep feeding her critical care or mashed up moist pellets if needed as well.

I believe most members tend to use the gripe water rather than Infacol as they react differently and it is better for piggies.

I have been lucky never to have been in that position so cannot remember why but am sure @helen105281 will be able to advise you so I have tagged her for you.

Sending love and hugs to both of you at this time xx

I believe it is the same ingredient = simethicone. Just different brands

Gripe water is a different product altogether and does not contain Simethicone, it works differently. There are very mixed views in the piggy world about Infacol.

Gripe water tends to disperse the bubbles of gas, whereas Infacol makes them go into one big bubble.

I will go the supermarket and get some after work tomorrow. Anyone have an idea on does. I think i read on the form .3ml every 3-4 hrs

She is taking Zantac also

That is the dose I use. Does the Infacol seem to be helping though? I am worried about going against what your vet has suggested.

Good to know all I could find was infant gas relief with simethicone as infacol is not sold in the US as far as I could figure

Slightly. Bit I'm worriedabout the big ball of gas it is building up. I presume little pockets of gas is better.
It was a vet nurse who recommended infacol as she has 10 guinea pigs x

OK. Try the Gripe water instead and see. I know some vets do recommend Infacol but everyone seems to have different opinions. Carry on with massage therapy too.
