Not Eating, can't figure out why?

Hi Debbie, thanks for coming to see us at Simons. It was very kind of you to take some time out of your day to see us. He has just eaten a handful of dandelion leaves and nibbled a small piece of carrot so fingers crossed. But we are still syringing, we will let you know how he gets on :) x

I've been thinking about Magic a lot today. It suddenly hit me that he is being very like Buddy was. Buddy stopped eating and was seen by Simon a couple of times. No reason could be found for him not to eat and I fully syringe fed him for nearly three weeks. I was convinced there must be something dental going on but his teeth checked out perfectly every time. Then one afternoon, after watching him sat hunched up in the cage looking really sad, in desperation I went out to my piggie shed and brought in Lola and Cherry and popped them in with him. What a difference that made! Suddenly he became animated, interested in eating again and within days was back to eating for himself fully. Fortunately Buddy was already castrated so I was able to do that, but I am thinking that maybe a friend would be just what Magic needs. Simon has castrated many of my boars without any problem and as he does all the neuter ops for Rabbit and Guinea Pig Welfare he really is the man for the job if you decide to go that route. The other option is to go on the waiting list at Rabbit and Guinea Pig Welfare for a spayed sow or possibly get him another boar friend but I know you are worried about doing that as you have girls very near.

Anyway, it was lovely to meet you today. If you come this way again you must pop round to meet all my little furry guys, and if you did decide to get Magic neutered then he would be more than welcome to stay for a few days.

I am so glad there is nothing wrong with him, and hopefully a friend as i suggested would be just what he needs, have you considered taking him boar dating first to see if he can find himself a fellow boar friend? Then failing that looking into getting him neutered...?

How has he been lately? xx

Magic is not good, he looks ill and he is loosing weight fast. Before I was syringe feeding him 100g a day and he stayed at 1300g, now I syringe him 160g a day and he looses 60g a day. He is not even eating grass and dandelions I cut for him. I'm waiting for a call back from Simon in the faint hope he can think of something. Simon's receptionist has just called and he suggested zithromax, so I've called my vet to see if they can get it. A glimmer of hope.

If there in nothing evidently wrong with him AB wont do him any good, do you have a teddy or cuddly toy in with him as a form of company while you look into getting him a friend? This has known to comfort and help lonely pigs.

What are you syringe feeding him?

Have you tried him on Banana, the odd biscuit, spinach, parsly, savoy cabbage and broccli, these were all popular with my boy when he wasn't eating.

His teeth will also be growing while he isn't grinding them down with hay, so this could also be something to think about, their teeth grow a matter of mm per week so if his teeth are starting to get longand causing him discomfort this won't help

Good luck xx

I've put a soft toy in with in, he is not impressed. I'm feeding him recovery plus and baby food. I must have tried every fruit and veg in the last few weeks, he is not interested. I guess I'm clutching at straws.

Big hugs, its horrible when there is no obvious signs, hopefully you can get something sorted for him. Big hugs xx

Unfortunately we had to take Magic to the vets for one last time last night, he went downhill so much yesterday and for the first time started to suffer. Up until saturday there was still hope but that sadly faded throughout yesterday. We were still trying to syringe feed but not managing to get much in and then noticed he wasn't passing any pellets or water and was in discomfort when we picked him up. It's like his digestive system had shut down. The vet agreed that it was time to put him to sleep. As sad as it was we knew it was the best thing to do. He will be greatly missed, the girls feel sad, not heard a peep from them these last 2 days 8...

Many thanks to everyone who has offered help and suggestions, it is still a mystery as to why he was ill in the first place ?/

x
