Not eating hay

My daughter’s two piggies had stopped eating their hay and were generally appearing unwell. Took them to the vet who said they were siblings and both had a genetic condition that was causing 3 of their molars to grow over their wee tongue. Teeth were subsequently filed down. Piggies had pain killers and special build up
Food for a few days, which they loved. They are now eating everything except hay. Bought a different type of hay, was meadow now Timothy. They seem happy within themselves.

I'm sorry to hear they have dental issues.

How long ago was the dental work done?
Piggies with dental issues can lose confidence in eating if they expect pain or are still experiencing any pain; or if there is still an issue with the teeth then they can still struggle with hay.
Do discuss any ongoing issues with your vet

While they are not eating hay, you must continue with the syringe feeding the recovery feed. Hay is the largest and most important part of the diet so it is essential they get the often from the recovery feed to keep their gut working properly. Eating veg isn’t enough (it only makes around 15-20% of the daily food intake) and isn’t what their gut needs for proper function.

Make sure you weigh them daily (each morning) so you can monitor that they are getting adequate syringe feeding intake to keep their weight stable each day.
