Hi guys, I’m a first time guniea pig owner and after reading your guides I’ve been putting out a selection of vegetables but the piggies are only eating the yellow peppers and leaving all other veg, also we have 2 piggies and being babies and new they seem to do a lot of their eating once we are in bed so not even sure which one is eating the peppers or if it’s both... I’ve tried them with spinach, kale, Coriander cucumber, peppers, carrot.. they didn’t mind the carrot and cucumber & ate a little Coriander & kale but know from the guides cucumber doesn’t have much nutritional value and carrots high in sugar.. do I just keep trying with all these veggies or just give them what they like? Xx thank you for your advice

Hi! Guinea pigs learn what is safe to eat and what not from their mothers. If that has not happened, then their digestive system is not accustomed to veg and they are very wary about veg.

Please stick to what they eat and add just one new veg with every meal, leave it lying around for a few hoursso they get used to the texture and smell. It takes patience and persistence, but you'll get there eventually with most veg and fresh herbs.

As hay makes over 80% of the daily food intake and your pellets are hopefully reinforced with vitamin C, you need not worry.

Thank you I’m using burgess excel pellets, the people in pets corner said these were good pellets and what the piggies were used too so I left them on it, I put out a fresh bowl every evening and they eat some but never all.. I can hear them munching on their hay a lot but I’ve been putting out a large amount of hay as they are babies and seem to really like hiding in it, sleeping in it playing in it aswell as eating it so it’s hard to tell how much is actually being eaten .. so for now I’ll just put out peppers each day & then one other veg each time and see how we go.. think it’s a learning curve for me & piggies at the moment, thank heavens for forums like these! Xx
