So my the hay for my GP came yesterday and because of the lack of hay before, I just gave him more pellets and less hay. Now he has a lot of hay but I notice that he's not eating it. Will he still eat hay?

Reduce the amount of pellets you feed back down to the recommended one tablespoon per day, they should eat the hay again if you not overfeed anything else

As of now I'm not giving him any pellets at all. The hay is just there, I also think that I spoiled him too much on pellets. How many days would this last?

they should start eating the hay again if there is nothing else for them.
If you were to run out of hay again, then feeding them grass is the best alternative rather than increasing their pellets

He is still not eating any as of now. I tried giving him pellets but he then ate some. I removed the pellets right away because I thought he has intestine problems.

Guinea pigs need unlimited hay as it’s essential for diet as well as for their back teeth. Guinea pigs who aren’t eating hay can develop over growing of the back teeth which requires dental treatment. This would vary depending on where in the world you are. In the UK, we have a guinea pig dentist in Northampton as most vets (even exotics) aren’t properly trained in guinea pig teeth. If you’re elsewhere in the world, you would essentially have to hope for the best in regard to dental treatment. Offer your guinea pig grass if you can as well as hay. If he doesn’t eat his hay after a day or two, consider taking him to the vets and get them to check his back teeth

Make sure you buy another bag of hay when you’re half way through the current bag. You can also try buying another type of hay to see if he’ll eat that one.

How was he with hay beforehand? Did he used to eat it a lot? I also notice you say a guinea pig. Is he alone or did you lose his friend? Piggies are very social and shouldn’t live alone.

Yeah he is only one and even I want to get another one my parents wouldn't let me. He was eating normally when there is pellets but when it comes to hay, as of now, he doesn't eat it. Before he does, until I gave him few hay because the stock is almost gone.

I wouldn’t give him more pellets than he needs. Just keep the hay in there and hopefully he will start eating it again. Make sure he is still pooing and peeing - there is a lag of about 1-2 days in terms of input-output.

I’d have a word with your parents in that the piggy’s welfare needs aren’t being made by making him live alone. 7 more years would be a very lonely existence if he lived alone still. It would be like you being made to live with an animal and never again having human interaction - living with something that doesn’t understand your body language, language etc.

:agr:Also, guinea pigs require constant social interaction, meaning you’d have to spent around 20 hours a day with your guinea pig to provide adequate social interaction to meet his needs.

Hi guys, just want to update what's going on. He is still not eating his hay, I think I saw him yesterday eating hay but I think his just nibbling it. I still haven't given him pellets and coz of that he's still not eating. He does pee but he doesn't really poop that much. I can count his poop yesterday it was like 5 pieces and very small. What should I do?

To begin with, it sounded like he was just favouring pellets over hay but if he now isn’t eating them either or anything at all, then you need to step in with syringe feeding him and speak to a vet. If he hasn’t eaten hay for a while, then he may have teeth issues or there could be something else going on

Well he is eating his pellets but I'm still not giving him any pellets today. His active and I don't think he has stomach problems because he eats pellets

Also, sadly, there are no near exotic vets in our place, there is a vet but for dogs only and it is closed.

He really needs to eat hay, eating pellets alone won’t sustain him and could cause other issues - if he isn’t eating hay, then his teeth will overgrow which will stop him from wanting to eat

I looked at his teeth and it seems fine. Also there are no available veggies in our house but I think I can buy tomorrow. Should I give him his pellets or let him be?

Unfortunately you can’t look at the teeth and know they are ok yourself - it has to be done by a vet with instruments to see right back to the very back teeth.

Feed him as normal with the normal amount of hay, and normal limited amount of one tablespoon of pellets per day. Can you get him grass until you can get some the fresh veg? He really does need some fresh food to ensure he is getting enough nutrients

We live in a condominium and we do have grass but I don't think its clean because it is the rooftop.

The advice is as long as it doesn’t have dog, cat or fox pee on it then it should be ok. You need to use your own knowledge of your area though

I dont think its still safe coz there might be some chemicals in the grass. But I'm going to ask our maintenance guy here if they put chemicals in it. There are dogs who pee there but I think in some areas there are none at all

Good idea to ask - we can obviously give you the advice, but without knowing anything about your area, there is only so much we can do!

It is so important he starts eating his hay and some veggies though, he cannot and should not be sustained just on pellets

15889210232635658586793987756534.webpso yeah can i feed him this grass? I dont think they put chemical on these because I saw them watering these every few days

So before I putted here that my GP is not eating hay but is eating his pellet. But now his not eating his pellet nor his hay. I haven't given him any veggies because we don't have any veggies as of now. I tried feeding him grass but he didnt eat it too. There are no exotic vets here in our place. What should I do? He does pee but there less poop and his poop is small and probably 5 poops at most

If you think this is now more of a serious issue than in your other posts suggests, then he needs to see a vet to find out exactly what is going on and receive appropriate treatment.

If he is not eating at all then you need to step in with syringe feeding him - the guides below will tell you how to do it. Also start to weigh him every day at the same time each day so you can ensure he is getting enough food and his weight isn’t dropping.

Yes that looks good. Have you tried a different type of hay for him? What hay was he on when you got him?

Are you in the US?

Please see a general vet as soon as possible. Not eating is a matter of life or death!

You need to step in feeding right now if you want to be in with a chance of saving your piggy's life. Mushed pellets will do, but please read the advice in these links below. they will show you exactly how you go about it and how much and how often you need to feed:
