my 3 year old guinea pig has stopped eating for no apparent reason.He lives with 5 others and all get on well.I have taken him to the vets and they can see no reason.But now he is getting so thin you can feel his spine.Vet has given me the following medication to stimulate his gut i think they said to get him eating again; FIBREPLEX 2X DAY, BIO-LAPIS WITH WATER DAILY,SUPREME RECOVERY SACHET WITH WATER SYRINGE FEED 3X DAY.
I have read your anorexia info but don`t know what is wrong.Anyone have any ideas or been in same situation? Any help would be appreciated.Worried about losing him now.

is he pooing and weeing ok? i had a guinea pig a few years ago who had trouble pooing and therefore wouldn't eat very much we ended up having to put him on a high roughage diet due to bad impaction. another thing to look out for is bullying. i know you said they get on well but have you seen any of the other pigs shooing him away from the food?
let me know x

I am sorry for you and your poor boy! It is so worrying when you want to help but don't know what is wrong. There are many reasons a piggy can stop eating.

Is your boy trying to eat, but can't chew and lets food fall out of his mouth? That is usually a sign of tooth trouble (overgrown molars).

Or is your boy just not interested in food at all? That would be an indication that he is ill or in a lot of pain.

Here is a check list of possible reasons:

You may want to contact Vedra at the CCT (Cambridge Cavy Trust) or find an experienced exotics vet in your area - guinea pigs are classed as exotics. He may be able to help you further.

Please weigh your boy daily.

The vet kind of poked at his bottom and some poo`s dropped out.So the vet thought that end was not too bad, abit hard though.I will see if its the other girls being the problem.What was the high roughage diet you tried? Might give it a go just incase.Thanks for your help.

Hi tiger,

I have a syringe-feeding factsheet I can email you, if it will help? Smaller frequent feeds tend to be ideal to get the digestion moving as normally as possible - three times a day isn't quite enough if he isn't eating at all for himself. If you drop an email to me at [email protected] I can send the factsheet through straight away. :)

I agree with Wiebke, a dental check is definitely in order - back teeth as well as front teeth! After that I would look for other medical problems, but first stop should be those teeth.

Are you able to travel to have him treated/helped?

Factsheet would be great.Took him to vets yesterday and they said teeth ok, heart & chest ok, everything else they looked at ok.Could not find any pain.He has no interest in food.Not even trying.

First off- he needs a good dental piggie person - CCT is great. Rule that out and then your vet (or another more cavy savvy) should be able help diagnose any other problem....ad if they csn't thrn perhaps consider changing vets

NB - You need to move fast if he isn;t eating........and try to maintain him in the interim with Recovrey and the rest....

He passed away Pebble - his thread is in the Rainbow Bridge section.
