I have two pigs that live seperate as they dont get on with eachother.

One of the escaped into the other ones cage and they started fighting, when I went to split them up one of them latched onto me and wouldnt let go.

The result? 4 hours waiting in A&E and 7 stitches in my thumb...

Certainly learnt my lesson, dont go putting your hands between two fighting pigs.

Beware the devil pig :P

Yeah I picked him up and placed him back in his cage but got the shock of my life while doing so!

Never been to the hospital in my life and ended up there 'cos of a pig :P

Ywah, he clamped down at the bottom and then it tore the rest of the way.

The nurses were really surprised too, not something they get in A&E every day :))

OUCH! Hope it heals quickly! Piggies have strong teeth, you can see the damage they could do to each other in a full blown fight!

Well done for separating them, I'm sorry about your thumb, that looks very very very painful! Knowing how sharp hamster teeth are, guinea pig teeth must be extremely sharp! Hope it heals quickly!

Hope it heals quickly for you! I'm lucky to have never been bitten by any small furry. I've been nibbled when hand feeding but never bitten x

Ouch! I have scars on my hand and legs that I got during a failed bonding attempt with Mimsi and Montgomery. Whenever I get a tan, the scars from the bites are clearly visible. It hurt sooo much and bled for ages! Didnt need stitches though!

Ouch! glad you and piggies are ok though.

Is anybody else slightly squeamish and felt the need to look due to the warning?

Ouch! Poor you, that will be sore for a while. Looking at the wound you wouldn't expect it from a guinea. Valuable lesson learned then.

ouch, that looks real sore, i hope your ok?

I think it an instant reaction tho to dive in and stop them, as i did it when i tryed to bond another female, luckily i dint get bitten. :(

Omg! Hope it heals without any hitches! Hence the recommendation of having a towel nearby when bonding pigs.

Ouch! They do say never seperate fighting piggies with your bare hands and to throw in a towel but its defo an instinct reaction to jump in there, I also have a scar from doing the same thing mallethead
Hope it heals ok, the things we do for piggies eh?!

have been bitten by a hamster and a snake before but not any other of my animals but they were bad enough esp when the snake had his mouth latched on my thumb as he missed his food, luckily he realised and let go as he may have just tried eating my thumb!
it just shows what damage their teeth can do to each other, have read that they can cause damage but didnt realise it could be that bad!
hope it heals well with no problems

Holy mother of all things PIggy!
That is a serious wound!
lots of healing vibes to you!

shows how much damge they can do to eachother :(

I used to work in plastic surgery and we saw lots of cat, dog and human bites but never saw any guinea pig bites! That looks a good one! Hope it heals quickly and painlessly....and a lesson learned! :(

let this be a lesson to everyone, never just put your hand in to seperate fighting pigs, they will latch on and this is the result, throw a jug of water over them to startle them then using thick gloves grab one whilst they are thinking what the hell was that

That is epic, who knew piggies could do that!

The water trick mentioned also works with dogs!

I hope they gave you a tetanus shot while you were in A & E? Hope you'll feel better soon.

I would NEVER put my bare hands into a fighting boar pair as you can be very seriously injured- as shown! Ouch by the way! :(

I have a towel handy at the side of cages and especially if I'm trying to bond, and that gets put over the offending piggy before carefully removing. I have been 'nipped' once or twice in the past, one piggy decided to have a bite through my jeans and made a big bruise on my thigh and a hole in my trousers! Piggy teeth are lethal! :(

Jug of water? That's abit extreme don't you think? :p
When bonding my piggies, Paula brought a dustpan to separate them just in case of a fight.

It looks very sore! I didn't think piggies were capable but shows how brutal fights can be. I thought your finger had totally come off at first :...
Hope it heals soon.

I'm really pleased you weren;t seriously injured but so sorry for your subsequent angst in A&E.

You were very lucky to only have (an albeit deep) fleshwound from what was clearly a "killing" guinea pig bite.

I hope that besides tetanus you have been gven some pretty hefty antibioitics (clindamycin) to stave off infection.

For those of You who may have been shocked by what has happened - when two boar guinea pigs really don;t like each other they can launch a "killing" bite designed to penetrate either side of the backbone.

If you are unlucky like me, then despite any towels to hand, if you get bitten you could end up as i did - bitten on the back of my hand through to the bone with two tendons to my fingers severed. (Doesn't help the emergency logistics if you happen to be wearing a bikini at the time!)

It was an ambulance and major sugery job necessitating 48hours in hospital and 4 years on I am still receiving hospital treatment to try and get back proper mobility in my fingers.

I was a concert pianist - and looking at studying to be a vet. Given what has happened there is no chance now of etiher.

Please do NOT try to seperate fighting boars unless your whole hand(s) are completely covered in thick gauntlets. A killing bite from boar to boar actually can do less damage to the other guinea pig than to your own hand.

Better still - do not even try to think about boar dating/bonding or putting separate boars near each other without having adequate hand protection handy.

Hope you have a speedy recovery and there are no longer tem effetcs.

x

Thanks for all the tips :)

They gave me a tetanus jab and 2 different lots of antibiotics.

Its very sore and defo wont be trying to bond them any more, they live side by side in separate cages and we dont hear a peep out of them they sniff each other and run up and down. Thought maybe they would take a liking to each other :))
