COVID-19 Not Happy

I know it selfish of me but coronavirus really is affecting everything, schools are shutting now probably until the summer holidays (~6 months), shops and small businesses are shut, everything is hard to get, it’s my birthday on Saturday but I’ll be confined to my house for the whole day, some workplaces are shut, people are having to work from home, it’s just not ideal

Just need to rant I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️
 
It's okay to rant! Happy Birthday for Saturday - it's my birthday today and I was going to be having a nice day trip to North Yorkshire with my parents and sister but obviously that's now on the backburner indefinitely. We had to do a present drop whilst keeping our distance as though my Mum doesn't have what I would call a major health problem, she has had a rocky start to the year health-wise and is on steroids, and both my parents are in their 70s. I live alone anyway, but I've stopped going round to physically see my family as I don't want to unwittingly pass anything on to my parents. I've also got my first ever cruise booked in June (Sweden, Finland, Russia and Estonia) which is looking increasingly unlikely... Particularly disappointing as I can't afford a foreign holiday every year so this is/was going to be special, and I've always wanted to go to Sweden. And now all the sport is going for a burton aswell! So yes - I'm fully prepared to do my bit for the greater good and I really feel for those who are suffering and what heartbreak there is to come - but I'm British and I shall have a selfish moan too!

Happy birthday! That’s such a shame for you, I was meant to go to Germany later on in the year (I have always wanted to go, ich liebe Deutsch, und Deutschland), I have been learning German for a while now and I was looking forward to getting a glimpse of their culture (I travel a lot round Scotland and have been to England a few times, but have never been on a plane or left the UK) and getting a firmer grasp of the language, I’m not great at it but I do enjoy learning it and would like to get better

I hope your mum is okay, and that you don’t feel too lonely x
 
Just getting the anguish out of your system can be a good thing. Keeping the disappointment and frustration over the situation to yourself just makes you feel worse, I think. We can all help each other through this and be there to listen to others, even if we can't actually make the situation itself better.

Thank you - the steroids seem to be keeping her condition in check so she is doing alright if not fully 100%. To be honest I don't have a jam-packed social life at the best of times, so I'm sure I'll be okay! As @Piggylove82 says we can be there for each other on this board; especially so if/when there are more restrictions in place and we're all going a bit stir crazy :crazy: I hope your Germany trip can go ahead or at least be re-arranged - I've been once, to Berlin, about 20 years ago; it was a really great and interesting city, and is on my very long longlist of places I'd like to visit/go back to.

You can always chat with me in German if you wish to! I am a native German speaker. :)

Hopefully there will be another year when you can go and visit. Just bad timing; but life has that bad habit. :(

I lived in Germany for 12 months when I was in the Royal Military Police. ;)

Yes I suppose I could go another time, but I had gotten very excited!
My German is nowhere near conversationally fluent, I hope to achieve that (and more) someday, though. It’s very hard when nobody you know is really trying to learn the language properly too! I find the language interesting and I pick up on it reasonably quickly, but I find the changes in grammar when referring to males and females etc tricky (I’m generally okay with that I just cannot seem to wrap my pea sized brain around the eating and drinking, there are so many ways to say it, it gets a little too much at times!)
 
I was based in Fallingbostel in NW Germany on the A7 between Hamburg and Hannover. ;)
 
@Sophie B I visited Germany in 2015 to visit my German friend. Two days in Herten, three in Berlin & four days at her uni town (I forget its name) & a Cologne day trip. I absolutely loved it, I can't speak German however & could barely walk off the plane when I landed at Manchester as we never stopped!

There comes a time you have to jump in if you want to get fluent and pick up on the everyday language in any new language, and of course it is very frustrating when this is foiled.


I had to do that with English.
My first language sojourn in the UK was sadly cut short by the outbreak of the first Golf War (nearly 30 years ago!) and then the death of my grandad, so I had to figure out how to get from a snowed-in stand-still London (yes, that actually did happen!) asap to Hamburg to stay with my granny as support until the rest of my family could travel up from Switzerland for the funeral. That was in the days before the world wide web, so it is wasn't just a matter of a few clicks! And it was at time of maximum bomb alert and hardly anybody travelling. It was to be my long anticipated and already delayed graduation present from my parents...

I had to wait another 5 years until I could afford to return. But as I met my future husband at the end of that holiday, I don't mind - these things are sometimes meant to be! There may be a pot of gold waiting for you at the bottom of your own rainbow after the deluge... :tu:
