I have 2 piggies Freddie and baz every morning they run down for their food today Freddie never came he stopped in his bedroom I put some food near him but he did not seem interested I went back out and baz was lying near him but food was gone but I think that may be down to other one has he is greedy . Freddie still not moved so I went out a bit later still same place with baz next to him . I am going to clean them out in a min and let them run in house see how he goes then if perks up . I'm just wondering can they get depressed or if he is having off day

It is not normal for piggies to have an 'off day' like that. It sounds as though something is seriously wrong please get your boy to a vet asap.

Hi thank you all for reply's I bought him in and walked around and went in a cosy and curl up fell asleep tried to temp him with celery but not interested have rang a home vet to come but won't be till late tonight will let you know how get on

Oh I hope things are better with your piggy xx

Hi sorry not been on been upset all day the vet could not find nothing wrong checked teeth and mouth ok and chest is clear and tummy he had 2 syringe full saline painkiller in case in pain 2 other injections be told to feed him by syringe every 20 mins with recovery food the vet held not much hope for him he does not seem any better today vet coming out at 3 to give another injection

Oh dear, poor Freddie. Did the vet check his back teeth too? Did they give you Metacam for him? I have found this very effective as a painkiller for guineas.

The best food I have found to tempt a poorly guinea is grass picked from the lawn. It has worked for me to get a guinea interested in food again when they have been unwell.

Best wishes to you & Freddie.

Is there any way you can get Freddie to an exotic vet ?
Taylor and Marshall in Shifnal, West Midlands are excellent...Hannah the vet there is totally fantastic and saved our girl recently with her expertise. I would really need to explore all avenues to help the wee man :(
If you can get him there, please do or at least give the surgery a call for advice - they are very good and highly recommend them.

Hugs to Freddie from us all here x>>

So sorry :( sometimes it is so fast with guineas. I hope Baz will be ok without Freddie. Best wishes to you all

Sorry for your loss x

RIP Freddie

I'm so sorry to hear that. It sounds like little Freddie was a very poorly piggy. Hugs. x

I never had piggies before I had Freddie and baz and now know if they stop eating to get the vet straight away has the go down really quick I keep wondering if it's shock off having injections and said he should give a little squeak when I inject him but he never did nothing and said that was worrying sign and held not much hope for him

As guinea pigs are naturally prey animals, they tend to mask illness really well. There's no guarantee you could have done anything more for Freddie even if you had seen a vet sooner. It is normal to wonder if you could have done anything differently but please don't blame yourself, sometimes they do just get ill really quickly.

We weigh our guineas (& hamsters) regularly & keep a note of the weights because you will often see a weight loss before you see any other symptoms & it can make you just be more aware & watch out for other signs if this occurs. A big weight loss would trigger a vet visit for one of our beasties.

I would keep a close eye on Baz's weight now as a lone piggie can sometimes be a bit sad following the death of a cagemate.

With best wishes,

shiny

At the mo baz is still eating they were in conservatey but have now bought baz into living room so he has got us baz is the biggest out of two and bit of a bully

Hi Shazbo,

Really sorry too hear of your loss. I hope that you are ok

Thanks mizzpigs I still get upset just worried now about baz at the mo seems ok but you never know. People don't understand they think your daft when you get upset over animals but they become a part of your family

i know that some people don't understand but I think thats the good thing about being on a forum like this as everyone genuinely loves their animals just like we love our friends/family, because your right that's what they are family.

I feel for your loss as like me I think you are a new piggy owner and I know if something happened to either of mine I would feel sooo soo sad, no matter what others may say or think. I have a cat of 16 years and I dread the day that she will need too be PTS or just won't be lolloping around on our bed anymore. I absolutely adore her and have spent my 20's, 30's and now early 40's taking care of her and her taking care of me. Sounds silly but hey I don't care as thats how I feel really. I cry when one of our chickens die and get emotional when i read rainbow bridge so hey your not alone with those feelings and certainly there are so many people on here who do feel the same so take some comfort in that. I think if it makes you feel better about Baz and his health then maybe just go and get him checked over so it makes you feel a bit easier that he hasn't picked something up from your poorly piggy. Take comfort that people do understand x
