I'm a member of a few Guinea Pig groups on FB and in one of the groups, I'm currently arguing with two people who swear their pigs are happy living alone!

No matter what evidence I put in the reply, or what I say, they just won't accept I could be right. I even said that in Switzerland it's illegal to own just one pig, but the woman just said she didn't care and doesn't even live in Switzerland!

It's very frustrating, they laugh and argue their points and will not see anything wrong with it. One has owned pigs for years and always kept them on their own, and the guy has recently got a young piggie who he says exhibits happy behaviour whenever he sees him, so he can't possibly be lonely or depressed.

I think I'm going to get banned from the group soon! :ban::(

So sad I've seen similar things or photos of dressed up guineas or ones where they are being sold because they no longer have the time, then state the guinea pigs are 3/4/5 months old and I don't understand how they had the time a few weeks ago but now don't, in truth they got them and are now bored with them 😡😡😡

It's not just guinea pigs. Recently I've seen a lone piggy in a filthy, tiny cage with no hay or hides, a dog who spends all day in a cage and a hugely underweight snake in an unheated too small tank. What baffles me is that all of these particular animals were expensive to buy, so not even just impulse purchasing.
Also even just on this forum (you don't even need to join) you can get all the information about getting a decent sized c&c set up much cheaper than a shop cage. I myself found out just by googling and looking on Amazon because I thought kavee prices were too high (still would have paid it though), so why are so many piggies being kept in cages that are too small.
Apologies, I've gone into rant mode 😤

I avoid FB Piggy pages like the plague. The ideas about how piggies should be kept just makes my blood boil and it's so not worth it. I only follow a few FB pages including TEAS and Mandy's Guinea Pig Rescue (my local rescue) because I know that they really care about guinea pig welfare.

Completely understandable.

Just thinking about all those poor animals.....😢😭

Lately, I have typed out (Because my hand writing's terrible!) a note, to print off and put through somebody's door in the village I live in, next week (When they're out at work - which they always seem to be!) to tell them that the two poor bunnies that they keep in a cage much too small, dirty and with no enrichment, should be better looked after, otherwise they should rehome them! I did call the RSPCA but they basically said they had more important cases to deal with and were over stretched so they wouldn't be sending anybody out to investigate! 😡😥 The poor rabbits have to resort to just sleeping on the shelf in their cage because the rest of it is so dirty, and tiny, and there never seems to be anybody in, hence why I always peer in their window to look at the poor things just sitting there looking bored and miserable. 😥

It’s awful to see any animal suffering.

Don’t get me wrong, I adore my piggies, but my long term passion is rabbits (35+ years worth of experience with them) and I can’t stand seeing them kept in cages like that.
Sadly it’s lack of research on the owners part and the fact they are usually told by pet shops that it’s ok. A minimum of 60 square feet of permanent space is needed for rabbits (so never just a hutch) - mine are kept in around 110 square ft and seeing them exhibit natural behaviours is so rewarding.
