Hello everyone, I have lurked this forum for months and have finally decided to create a thread, although this isn't a good first thread but I need some advice. I have a male guinea pig who is approx 1 year old, I got him last june and he came with a friend, his friend wasn't of his own species but a rabbit friend. On christmas day I moved gizmo my current piggie into an indoor cage with his new friend gadget who is approx 5 or 6 months old, they have been living together since christmas eve. Recently I noticed gizmo has been sneezing, because he used to be an outdoor pig I never heard or seen him sneeze so I dont know if his sneezing is excessive or normal. I am 14 years old so money is sometimes tight but I will pay anything to get gizmo back to normal if he has a health problem. I cant take him to a vet as and when * I like because we have no car and have to use public transport. We also have no internet atm so I have to use my sisters phone for internet, I will do what it takes to get him to a vet asap but I have to get mums permission first. I wont be able to check this thread often but I will try to due to having no internet. Sorry for such a long post. Thankyou in advance.

For thing is to weigh him - you should weigh your pigs weekly as weight loss can indicate a problem.

Does he sound wheezy? or have any eye discharge?

What bedding do you have them on as this can sometimes give them an allergy and they tend to cough and sneeze

Is he eating and drinking fine? poops okay?

Sneezing could mean a URI (Upper Respiratory Infection) so you will need to keep a close eye and look out for other signs as if not treated early these can be much harder to get rid of.

Sneezing can be due to dusty hay; that in itself it is not too worrying.

As soon as you notice other symptoms, like loss of appetite or weight, crusty eyes or nose, raspy or crackly breathing you need to book in Gizmo at the vets asap. URI is an illness that cannot be trifled with because it can kill very quickly if not treated.

Here is more information from the best medical website for guinea pigs:

Please weigh your piggies once weekly or - if you suspect illness - daily on your kitchen scales. This habit can help you notice illness quicker and give you a headstart in combatting illness.
