Guinea Mum

I have a male guinea pig who for the last couple of days has been very quiet and hardly moving. His breathing seems shallow and he's making a strange clunking sound when he breathes but very quietly. I have another male and he seems worried but in good health. Any idea what it is and what I can do to help?

Same advice - it sounds like a respiratory infection which needs being seen by a vet as soon as possible!

The problem, as you describe it, can also indicate heart failure.

Welcome to the forum Guinea Mum. It does sound like your piggie needs to see a vet as soon as possible. The lethargy and abnormal breathing sounds typical of a respiratory problem, which is fairly common.

How old is your piggie? Do you know if he has been eating and drinking himself in the last day or two?

Sadly Vince has passed away :(

The more I think about how he had gone, I am fairly sure he had a stroke. He seemed lopsided somehow and although he was drinking water from a syringe, it was all just dribbling out of his mouth. Anyway, he's gone to a better place now and is no longer in discomfort. Thank you for all your help!

I am so sorry for your loss - you have tried your best!

Big hug

I am sorry to hear the sad news but it was not unexpected from your description of his problem. His symptoms were not typical of a respiratory infection.
If it is any consolation, there was nothing you could have done for him.
