Male piggy Mojo is looking quite uncomfortable when passing urine. He squeaks gently for around 20 seconds gradually getting louder until he hunches up when he goes. He does seem to be weeing quite frequently.

There is no blood or smell and he is eating, drinking and behaving normally. He's had a course of baytril and a course of septrin and he's been to the vet today for xrays which have revealed nothing abnormal - no stones etc.

Vet has given him a long acting steroid injection in the hope of reducing any inflamation - but he's admitted he's not sure if it will help.

Wondered if anyone else has ever come across something similar?

I'm stumped too, Teresa, at least the xrays were clear but it doesn't really help get him better does it!

I hope he gets better soon, sweet piggy

I was just reading one of Peter Gurney's books this morning and I was on the illness section. All of the symptoms you mention were described by Peter and it said the most likely cause was cystitis, expecially if piggie is weeing so frequently and in pain with it.

Get some cranberry juice and give piggie that along with his meds.

Hope this helps

Hi Teresa I'm going through the same thing with my piggy Spike. He's had an xray and urine samples which show no sign of stones. Baytril didn't work neither did Septrin, our vet doesn't know what else to try now. I've just joined the Cambridge Cavey Trust and emailed Vedra last night for help. I'll let you know what she says when I hear back.
It's awful listening to him squeaking, I've really got my fingers crossed she can think of something else to try. Kate x

Cystitis can be very difficult to clear; perhaps additional cranberry juice/water mix can help?

As the x-ray has not reveiled any obstruction in the bladder or urethra (which must have been a relief) I am feeling as stumped as you as to further causes after his treatment for cystitis.

There seems to be quite a few cases of very stubborn cystitis about at the moment.

Was an anti-inflammatory given alongside the Septrin? Plenty of fluids is always a good step, cranberry juice may help if the pig will take it. Might also be worth trying a human cystitis powder, one containing potassium citrate; make up as for humans (although I tend to make up a quarter of the packet in a quarter of the water, to save wasting as much), and syringe as much as piggie will take.

I've bought him some cranberry juice - he loves it, even grabbed the syringe when it was empty.

Human cystitis powder - I'll give that a try as well. I had wondered before whether it could be used for piggies but it does say on the packet that men (of the human variety) shouldn't take it so I was not sure if it was ok for a male pig.

I'm sure that Mojo and my vet are alot less concerned than I am but I hate the thought of the poor chap being uncomfortable.

Thanks for all the advice - much appreciated :)

When Eliza had a UTI last summer, her urine started off a reddy colour and then turned clear. I took a sample in to the vets and the clear looking urine still showed up spots of blood through the microscope. Eliza was on Septrin for a very long 4 weeks until she got the all clear. Good luck xx
