I took Alaska for a health check today as his eyes were a little cloudy and I wanted to check his fur as he had some fur loss on his legs.

It was a different vet to the one I normally see and I definitely prefer my other vet. Firstly he said he wouldn’t suggest surgery for his eyes as he is a guinea pig (before even looking at his eyes) and I was like yes I know I just wanted you to see so I know how his eye sight is so I can cater his cage better if his eye sight is declining. So he has a look and says I don’t know it looks a little cloudy, helpful! I mentioned rumble strutting and he looked at me like I was out of my mind. Then finally he said he was over weight- Alaska is 1.110g which I personally think is fine for a boar looking at the recommended weights online. He suggested this was causing the lessening of hair around his legs. So all I can say is that I was a very proud mummy when Alaska peed on his table lol.

I will make sure to book in with my ordinary vet next time!

You go, Alaska!

I had a pig once that I took to the vet for a nail trim. It wasn't my usual vet and honestly I disliked her from the start, but I said nothing, there was no point in getting uppity if he was only having his nails clipped. And then...he wouldn't let her clip them. Every time she went to clip them he started biting at her fingers (not something he'd ever done before OR after) and we had to get someone else in to do them. Piggies _know_.

Wish the best for Alaska.
My regular veterinarian is an Exotic Pet doctor. There are many vets close by but I drive 45 minutes to an hour to see an exotic pet doctor for my babies.

Isn't it strange how vets can vary so much. I had a rotten vet visit recently, suggested they put my pig down - oh yeah, and the piggy is doing great thanks - no need for being PTS.
And yet today I went to my normal vets today and what a delight!. Ed was brilliant - knew his stuff, explained what he was doing got me helping the piggy so I knew in future - even though I had diagnosed the problem myself and he confirmed fly strike. He was great and cheaper than the last shoddy lot.

what a difference!
Stick to what you know...and who you know.

There is a vet 5 mins up the road from me that I saw once 2 years ago and didn't trust or like him. I go to my Vets4Pets about 20 mins away instead even though I pay almost twice the price for a consult. At least they know what they are talking about and see lots of piggies. You get to trust a good vet. I wouldn't go anywhere else for my fluffy spuds.
