Hi
So I have come home today to find Flip doing this motion

1) Lifting her bum as to wee
2) Straining
3) Flipping on her side and stretching out

This happened a few times. At first I thought she was trying to get comfy but it became obvious it wasnt. I noticed a wet patch (small for flip who goes like a camel!) with this white sludge, almost like chalk in it. I booked her straight into the vets and she got seen to. The vet felt her bladder and couldnt feel anything, checked her teeth and nose, ears etc. She weighed her and was 1.2 and is a healthy weight.

She gave me baytril to give her twice a day, and if she hasnt gone by the morning, to get her in for xrays.

Is there anything I can do to help her along? Before her episode, she was eating hay and broccoli fine. I think she had a drink as well but that I cant be certain of.

She is now not eating but I have heard baytril can reduce their appitites and also she is now at my parents so she might have her nose put out of joint a bit.

She has gone for a poo and they are fine, normal looking and normal size

Kinda at a loss as to what I can do, its now been 4 hours since her "episode". I will obviously be taking her back in the morning but anything I can do in the mean time? She is on fleece atm, so I will be able to see. Her bum is clean and I cant see any swelling around that area or anything that makes me think otherwise

Thank you for reading.

I'm sorry to hear she is poorly. As baytril is harsh for guinea pigs you will need to give her a probiotic an hour after the baytril. This should help lessen the harsh side effects it has.

I hope she is better soon.

Sorry that you're in this situation with a poorly piggy.
One spot of advice I would give is to ensure probiotic is given 1-2 hours after the baytril, mix a pinch up with 1ml of water in a syringe, keeps their stomachs working normally.
Hope your piggy gets well soon ! x
@Wiebke will more than likely be able to give more information on the situation :)

Will her getting more water not build up her bladder if she is unable to go. I feel so bad or her. She doesnt seem in pain, she is running around find to get away from me but its weird. I cant explain it. She is currently in a "sunggle sack". I dont want to handle her too much if she is wanting to wee cause it might just make her worse, if that makes sense

I use fibreplex which is a paste. I apply it to a piece of vegetable for the piggy to eat. Maybe that would work for you.

Please give her some probiotic about 1-2 hours after the baytril; that will hopefully help the guts.

You can also try to syringe her water, as much as she will take in one go. Do so in 0.5 ml (half small syringe) steps and give her plenty of time to swallow; that way, you prevent things from going down the wrong way. If you are worried about hydration, you can do up a sachet of dioralyte. I hope that she will be feeling better soon!

You always weigh a piggy that is ill or that you are worried about daily at the same time in the feeding cycle instead of just weekly.

Will give her the ProBitoics.
As I say, she was weighed today and is 1.2 which is good. She is still running about, she just ran from me, so she might not be in huge amounts of pain. Just horrible sitting here waiting, if you know what i mean?

No, you need to try to flush it out as much as possible to prevent things from building up more! The first pees may be painful, but it will hopefully ease soon and she will be much more confy in herself.

If symptoms don't go down much or come back quickly, you need to have an x-ray done to see what is going on in the bladder. Just feeling it is often not enough.

As I say, going back in the morning and thats the next step. I hope she does wee, I want her to go and for me to be there so she can have cuddles after as it will be painful.

Have you ever seen a piggie do them motions though?

The straining is typical for urinary tract infections or bladder issues. The fallingover however is unusual.

Sorry your piggy is poorly :(. Please keep an eye on her appetite whilst on the baytril, although it may help a lot of guineas, some can't tolerate it. I had to take my Caramel off it last week after 3 days (under vets agreement), as he stopped eating completely, and then had diarrhea. (Although I'm sure your piggy will be fine :))
My piggy was straining and squeaking when weeing, but never flipped on his side. I had an x-ray done, and they could not find any stones or blockage.
Keep up with the probiotics, and water. Is she eating at all? If not you may need to syringe feed critical care food or watered/mashed pellets. Wiebke will be able to advise you.

Afternoon all

We have Wee! She had a huge wee last night (during the night) nad then again this morning. She didnt strain this morning, just went straight for it
She is now all flopped out in her hay.
Just going to keep an eye on her :)

Great news!

Just make sure that she is either getting water syringed by you or you feed a bit more watery veg like fresh grass, cucumber, lettuce or celery in the next few days so she can flush out as much as possible.

we have weed again. we have also fallen asleep with our head in the grass bowl.... not complaining.

At the moment she is just on newspaper with hay at the bottom. I will put sawdust in there tomorrow but for the time being I am checking her wee for blood or white bits

I am bumping this up again. I have just woken to find flip has weed again and there are these white chalky bits in here wee still. She seems fine, as I came in she was eating hay and wondering about. I will keep an eye on her and make sure she isnt in pain but is this something that will flush out?

Ignore this, everything is ok. Haha
