I'm so confused as to which hay is the best in terms of nutrition and keeping my piggies' teeth trim! I have to order a staple hay between ings, meadow and timothy and rye. My pigs loved them all! To me the ings looks best because it is very green and is also organic but I don't know the nutritional value of it.

Does anyone know which would be best for my guinea pigs out of:
1) Timothy and rye hay
2) Meadow hay
3) Ings hay

Please state which number plus your reason. Thanks sooo much for any contributions! x

I have no idea but my pigs have only ever been fed on meadow hay ! Hasn't seemed to do them any harm and never had any teeth issues

hay has a very low nutritional value so I'm not sure there would be much difference in any of them

I reakon that it is good idea to give a variety of hays for interest and to mimic their natural diet.

I use ings in their large hay tray where they like to tunnel and stalkier hays in their smaller cat litter tray which they eat. They alsomhave a lot of grass.

Thanks! Mine love grass too! They will have a variety but I just want to know which to buy most regularly as a staple. x

maybe it is not allowed to post a link, but on Guinea Lynx you can find a chart with all the different hay and their nutritional data. Google "Guinea Lynx hay chart". Be careful with the ratio Calcium: Phosphorus which appears on the right. Check also the amount of proteins (alfa-alfa hay is good for babies, but not for adults). Experts suggest Timothy as the best hay, but I think it is better to vary. Hay has a great value for piggies's diet as they are able to digest and absorb nutrients from a product (the hay) which looks very poor. A good variety is a great choice, if your piggies are not fussy!
I use meadow hay (and I made it also by myself... a great and crazy adventure! :)) but my piggies loved it!)

Hey instead of hay I use readigrass, my pigs love it and it has more nutrition than hay. You can get it from amazon or any big pet store.

Oh really, I didn't know that. I've been feeding them it lots too. So would you just use hay? How much hay do you give daily?

You can give them Readigrass as a treat but they should have hay everyday. It needs to be available 24/7 so you need to make sure they have enough in their cage to be able to eat it whenever they want.

They're grazers like cows, sheep etc so they need to have access to hay all the time.

sorry for the stupid question: what is readigrass? I have never heard anything of that before and I have never seen any at the shops... Is it dried grass? maybe the amount of calcium depends on the type of the grass? because also hay made of dandelion is rich of calcium. Here vets say that a good hay is also the one for horses (not for cows and sheep who are fed with higher proteins hay) and that we don't have to use the hay for rabbits (farm animals) because they are "bloated" and made fat with alfa-alfa hay.

Hey! I have horses and it's what I sometimes give them. Yes it is just dried grass. I get it from my local pet shop. I'm going to swap back to hay and just give it as a treat now.
