Hi everyone, I'm so sad to have to post this but I don't know what else to do for my girl Nym. She is four years old and has always been a small pig, 750-800 grams well weight but she dropped quickly to 650g and was coughing when she ate and started slobbering. Straight to the vets and diagnosed with malocclusion and she had her teeth filed under anaesthetic. That was five weeks ago and she has not got better and continues to lose weight. She dropped to 550g after the surgery and has fluctuated between 500 and 560 since. We have been back to the vets several times and she has had two courses of antibiotics and an anti inflammatory injection, she seems to rally a bit after vet visits. She is still very slobbery but vet says her teeth are still fine but if they go bad again she doesn't have the condition to go through anaesthetic again so I am desperate to get weight on her in case she needs more work. I am syringe feeding her critical care, she is on fibreplex, she won't eat nuggets so I make her a softened mash every day with nuggets, carrots, apples and weetabix which she eats. She always has a selection of lots of veg, herbs and fruit available so she can eat whatever she fancies but she just isn't eating enough. I think the critical care is what's keeping her alive right now. I have sectioned her off from the others so she has her own food but can still see and hear them. They all live inside but I've get her a heat pad which goes in her cozies which she really likes. I am trying everything I can to make her comfortable and recover but she isn't getting better. Does anyone have any ideas that could help me? Her weight dropped to 484 grams today, I have sat with her all afternoon feeding her and giving her water and she has perked up. She still runs around and her eyes are bright but I am at the point where I know I am going to have to make a call on what is best. I want to do the right thing and I can't bear the thought of her suffering. I am heartbroken, she is the black and white pig in my profile picture. Can anyone help me? I just don't know what else I can do for her.

Please continue to syringe feed all the time. Our syringe feeding guide has got tips for dental piggies, including what amounts you need to aim for keep up the weight.

Can you get Nym down to Northampton to the Cat&Rabbit Care Clinic? They are currently the best guinea pig dental vets and they see guinea pigs with dental issues from all over the country on a near daily basis, so your best chance lies with them. They have saved a fair number of piggies that had been given up by other vets - all may not be lost for you and Nym, either!

Is she on any pain relief? I would make sure she is in case eating is causing her pain & also get her mouth checked for oral thrush which is something some piggies get after dental surgery. If you can get her to the Cat & Rabbit clinic in Northampton Simon does conscious dentals & is the best dental expert out there x

A visit to Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic is the way to go. I know it is a bit of a trek but it would definitely be worth it. We have set up a Facebook page for their long distance clients, so you can look at whether there is someone travelling from the same area who you could buddy up with, or take it in turns to bring piggies to Simon. People travel the length and breadth of the country with guinea pigs who have dental issues, as Simon can work wonders with them.

Thank you so much for your replies, we will keep going with the syringes and I will give the Northants clinic a call tommorow and see if I can get her in this week. Will have to take a day off work and it's quite a trek from Yorkshire but she is so sick if there's any hope I have to try. She isn't on pain relief any more Poppysmum, the vets gave her 2 weeks after the surgery, I will ask for her to go back on and whether she has thrush. I've seen a thead saying you can treat with Daktarin, is that right? Thank you all for your help, I feel a bit less hopeless now x

I hope that you can get her to Northampton soon; Simon and Kim are sure to check for rush. Please do not treat on spec. Daktarin should not be ingested.

Oh no I wouldn't treat without a diagnosis, hopefully I can get her in to the specialists this week, will call in the morning, thank you so much x

Wishing you all the best! my 6 year old Hywel had a comparatively very smooth ride thankd to Simon and Kim when he developed a nasty dental abscess last autumn, so I hope very much that they can work their magic on Nym!

Good news! Please keep up updated. I hope that you can keep her weight stable until then!

She has developed a head tilt today. Is this likely to be tooth pain or another infection? I will get her an emergency vet appointment tommorow at our local vets. So worried. X

It could well be related, I would keep the Friday appointment but get her seen tomorrow locally still if you are worried, even just to get her pain sorted. It could be an infection, and I would expect Simon will want to start her on antibiotics if so.

I can't get there sooner as it's a five hour trip and that's the soonest day I can get off work unfortunately. Will take her to our vets today for pain relief and antibiotics, they will be able to see if it's her teeth again or an ear infection at least. Her weight is still 542 today and she ate her mash yesterday and had syringes x

Hi everyone. Nym and I had our road trip to Northants today to see Kim. I'm afraid the news isn't good. Her teeth are actually fine still. She has only seen three other guineas with her symptoms before and suspects it is a neurological problem that has caused her to grind her teeth constantly and the really excessive salivation. Kim has treated one pig before with a drug combination that helped for a while so we are trying that but there's little hope of recovery. I'm really sad, but wanted to thank you all for being so kind and recommending the clinic, at least I know I have done everything I can for her and hopefully I can make her comfortable for a bit longer. X

Oh no, that's such a shame. You've done everything you can for her, but sadly some things just can't be fixed. :(x .

Try her on Woodwards gripe water, I found that helped with any inflammation in the throat and digestive system, I gave BonBon it twice a day, she stopped dribbling and put a bit of weight back on, so might work for little Nym xx
