Our new guinea pig, Bacon, is about two and a half years old. He is underweight, and it might be his time soon. He just peed on the carpet, and it was reddish tinted. Help!

It could be a UTI. Get him booked in at the vets as soon as you can. If so it is easily treated. It may be worth getting him xrayed though to rule out a stone. Is he squeaking when peeing? What is his weight?

He doesn't squeak before he pees, but he's barely eating, and on another thread I had, piggyfan said he might be sick, I believe you are also right, and I'll try to get a vet and keep a close eye on Bacon.

Your piggy is very young so hopefully he can bounce right back from whatever is making him poorly. Please take him to a vet for help as soon as possible. UTIs are easily treated with antibiotics, but if left they can prove very harmful.

Has he always been small? Or has he lost weight recently?

If he is barely eating he needs to see a vet quickly, as he could easily go into gut stasis :( Please get him to a vet & tell them about his wee & not eating. He is likely to be in some pain if he has a urine infection, which will affect his eating. You need to start syringe feeding him now as well. Have you hand fed piggies before or do you need advice on what to do?

I don't think he's in pain anymore. He is starting to get better after yesterday, and is eating a bit more. He's new to us and might have been homesick.

PS. When Sprite, my profile picture, broke his paw, we gave him medicine in a syringe, so if bacon is sick with anything, I'll try to hand feed him.

How many days have you had Bacon? A new piggy should start to eat within a day or two, evn if it is just when nobody is there. Not eating is generally a major alarm sign and needs to be taken seriously and addressed promptly. if you suspect a piggy to be in pain, you also need to see a vet. Please weigh any piggy whose food intake or health you are worried about on a daily instead of a weekly basis.

His pee can have been discoloured from veg like peppers or carrot, but it can also be the beginnings of a UTI, a urinary tract infection. In adult piggies, it can also be a sign of a potential bladder stone.

Bacon had a previous owner, but because she couldn't take care of him, we took him in. He might be upset for losing his owner, but when sprite squeaks happily, he follows. The discoloration in pee could also be from lack of water. His bottle was empty for a few days before we got him.

Also, there are red sores on the bottom of his pads. Any way to cure that?

If the sores are not open (in which case you were up against bumblefoot, which needs antibiotics), I would recommend to first disinfect the soles (in case of cracks through which bacteria could get in) and then use mildly soothing healing baby cream. I don't know a suitable US product bepanthen, nivea or sudocrem. Gorgeous guineas have a special foo salve. Poor boy; that sounds like too much sitting in his own mess! http://gorgeousguineas.com/ointments.html

You can make your own disinfecting saline solution by mixing one teaspoon of salt into 1 pint (500ml) of boiled, cooled water.
