Hi!

I know the use of oats are somewhat controversial, but I've read on a few other forums that they're good for older pigs who are having issues keeping on weight. Does anyone have any experience with this, or feel strongly one way or another? I've also heard that they are good for the skin.

I have a three year old skinny pig. I know he's not THAT old but he was sick recently and lost a decent amount of weight. I'm having issues getting him to put it back on, even though he's eating normally.
I don't want to give him oats if they're going to mess with his GI tract or something though.

Thanks!

Personally I don't think oats are necessary for the majority of pigs. The only time I have used them is an addition to syringe feed to try and quickly bulk up a sick piggy that needed further treatments where there is a risk from general anaesthetic at too low a weight. The vast majority of piggies will gain weight naturally after illness, no matter how slowly. Whilst you are seeing some gain I would leave them be.
