Hello all! My son is turning 10 and has requested guinea pigs for his birthday. He specifically said he wants boys. I can’t find any boars for adoption near me and I refuse to purchase from a pet store. it’s kind of a tight schedule as his birthdays in 2 weeks. Are there any noticeable differences between boars and sows besides privates? I guess what I’m asking is could I get 2 girls and tell him and his little brother they’re boys? This is probably the dumbest question you’ve seen lol I apologize.

You could do but do you really want lie to your sons? Just be honest and tell them you can't find any boys and so they will have girls instead if you are to get them for his birthday. The truth always comes out in the end. Better to be honest from the start. I have boys and girls Piggies and they are all lovely and I wouldn't be without any of them. Your son can always call them by boys names. I had a girly hamster called Bob!

I agree with Betsy about being honest.
You actually have a great opportunity to set a wonderful example for your sons.
Explain the reasons why you would prefer not to buy from a pet shop (good on you) and why it is important to stick to your principles.
Tell them there aren't any male piggies available right now, and give them the choice. Do they want girls now or are they prepared to wait a bit longer for boys?

I don't know where you're looking, but have you had a look at this rescues tab? You may find one you didn't know about. I would agree about being honest, somewhere down the line your sons may do something like let their piggies meet a friend's or something, and you would have a hard job explaining how a boy got pregnant. We were originally supposed to get 2 boy piggies because we have 2 little human boys in our extended family, but we ended up with 2 girl piggies and once the kids met them they forgot all about gender preferences and just loved them for being cute and furry. And now we have a rescued boy piggy too who the kids havent met yet... just get girl piggies and be honest and maybe it will teach your human boys that girls are quite cool really?

This reminds me of when my daughter was 4 years old and Alice the hamster died, and we replaced Alice the short haired albino female with Alice the dark grey long haired male with enormous testicles while she was at nursery... "Alice looks different today!" she said and it was only last year (19 years later!) that I told her about the hamster swap :)

Thanks guys. I do plan on telling them eventually. Just more like an accidental whoops a year or so from now that they are girls. Idk his little brother is in the phase where girls are nasty and all that and since Grayson is getting two, one of them is “his brothers”. (Caidan will not actually be caring for it yet) but I definitely see you guyses points. But to be clear haha if I were to follow through with the accident plan for a little while is there anything distinctly different that you could tell from an upright position.

You could take your son to a local rescue a few days before his birthday and let him see the guinea pigs, then say he can either adopt 2 from there or wait until you can find 2 boars, I bet once he sees the piggies he will fall in love and not want to wait any longer, and probably choose 2 females there and then!

I don't know where you are based but there are a few rescues in the Midlands with boys in at the moment

I really don't think it's a good idea to get girls and pretend they're boys but if you're adement on doing that, if your children aren't old enough to know what penises and testicles are, they won't know the difference.

But I agree it would be a great idea to take them along to the rescue so they can see that girls are just as cute as boys :)

Physically it's very difficult to tell the difference in young piggies, obviously boys will develop testes but to the untrained eye, there's no discernable difference. There are different things with regards behaviour. Girls will have a season every couple of weeks, when they may be a bit more territorial with each other, and boys will be more prone to fall outs in their teenage months 4-14. Both sexes are similar in their interactions with humans, which is purely down to personality.... Still think you should tell them tho lol.

There's not a whole lot of difference in terms of behaviors and appearance and I would think that your sons wouldn't necessarily notice the difference. I'm not sure of the age of your children, but I'm betting they would be so psyched about new piggies that they wouldn't even think to ask if they are little enough.

We've typically had female animals, so recently my daughter checked out a boy hamster, shrieked, "His balls are bigger than his head!" and promptly picked a female again. I guess she just wasn't used to the anatomy!
