Hello! My guinea pig, Buffalo is acting odd (kind of). Whenever he's out of his cage he's warms up to me really well, he'll take food out of my hand and if I take him outside for him to eat fresh grass, he'll groom himself in front of me (But not on the grass, he's too busy eating to do that. I'll place him on the concrete and make an odd shape around him with me feet and he'll set his rump against my thigh and start grooming himself, he'll do it when I'm petting him too). As soon as I put him back in his cage, he will run around and act all skittish again but not too skittish as when I first got him (2 days ago). Is that normal? Also, does anyone else's guinea pig eat a blaze of grass a certain way? Buffalo likes to eat the grass starting from the tip, if I'm holding the tip, he'll get as close as possible to my fingers and starting eating from there. Anyone else?

I think it sounds like he’s comfortable with you - enough to let you know he doesn’t want stroking when inside his home. When are you bringing his companion home again? Once they’re bonded and moved in together I would leave them alone to settle for a week. That’s usually the best course of action for new piggies anyway.

He sounds a real delight. Be careful with grass as their tums need to get used to it slowly.

Okay! His companion is being brought over to my house tomorrow morning. I'll be careful with the grass, I should be looking for soft poos right?

Yes. I would only give him handfuls for the next few days and slowly increase the amount. Once they’ve had their week you can put them out for 15mins then increase slowly over some days to 30mins.

Good luck and do let us know how the bonding goes! Fingers crossed it will all go well. Have a read of the guides again before tomorrow. Exciting! 💃

Hi

Guinea pigs are great personalities and have their endearing individual quirks. It's what makes them so lovable.

It sounds like he is settling in well. Just give him time.
If he is not used to being on his own much, he will be more skittish. Keep in mind that this is all new territory for him. Guinea pigs are prey animals that live in groups and feed in a larger colony, moving along established paths from their little dens in the undergrowth to the feeding grounds twice a day. No piggy scent anywhere means that this could be potentially dangerous territory. It takes a while for those instincts to settle and him becoming comfortable with his new life. ;)

Okay, that makes a lot more sense. I've never owned a guinea pig so the room he's in right now is just a really big room with his cage in the back. I've never had another guinea pig in the room besides from him. Thanks!

I think my guinea pig injured one of his hind legs, I'm going to be calling in to the vet to schedule an appointment tomorrow as most vets are closed on Sundays. When I had him close to me, he would lick my finger or some part of my hand then he was nibble/bite on it. Normal?

Yes that's normal. Your piggy might be looking for food when he dies that or simply just grooming you back.
