Hi there,

I must ask everyone here a question about an odd noise my Guinea Pig Buggles is making. Today when I was going to get him out of his cage to play he began making an odd noise. Its hard to describe. If you put your lips together and kinda hum "oom" but in short succession that was the noise he was making. He's done this before but when he did it he was in the middle of the floor and just sat there with his head up in the air, he looked like he was in another planet sitting there making this noise. I'm starting to get worried about this because I think he might be sick. Any help is appreciated.

Best Regards,

It's hard to say with your description but it could just be chutting. Chutting is a common piggy noise which they make when they're happy and content and going about their business. It sounds like they're talking to themselves or muttering to themselves. Is it like that? Is it high or low pitched? Does he do anything or move at all?

In the times I've seen him do it he was just minding his own business moving about. And it is extremely low pitched when he does it. I'm starting to think he's just chutting.

I looove chutting, it's like they're mumbling to themselves while doin' their thing "Just walking arooound, tum te tum.."
I'm not mad rolleyes
Sounds like it would be chutting if they're just doing it when they're minding their own business .

Sounds to me as if it's the noise they make when they've heard something they don't know, or seen something move that they weren't expecting. Like a "hmm hmm hmm hmm" in quick succession of each other, much faster than we can mimic it.
Mine do it if they're indoors, and I shut a cupboard or drop something. It's just a "what was that?" noise. The fact that his head was in the air was probably him checking out the suspicious situation :P

Talking of noises, does anyone mind if I discuss the noise I heard one of my girls making yesterday evening? I suddenly heard a really loud sort of bird noise coming from the conservatory and when I went out, expecting to find a trapped blackbird, I eventually realised it was Apple, sitting in the middle of the run. She didn't notice me at first, then she suddenly realised I was there and dashed into one of the tubes to hide. I was quite worried and when I picked her up, she almost seemed to be hiccupping.
Looking on the internet today (Yes, I spend too much time) I found this clip, which sounds exactly like Apple

but what does it mean?

Aww, you have a chirper. I can't tell you what the sound means, but I think it's relatively uncommon (none of my 6 chirp :( )

Thanks for all the info everyone, I haven't really heard him chutting before so this is new to me lol. He actually did it again today when the wind blew and the tree hit the window, he just began moseying around the floor. I guess he was curious!

I'm constantly amazed at the variety of noises different piggies seem to make. Soooo sweet
