Hi,

I have 3 boys and all of them have a weird sticky secretion on their rears just above the bums.

I have no idea if this is normal, ive never had pigs before 10 months ago.

I would like to know if this means i should be concerned or if this is completely normal and nothing to worry about.

If it is normal, what is it?

Thanks x

What you're describing is their scent patch.

It does get icky and the best thing to do is bathe them once a month, concentrating on that area.

Useful things to use are guinea shampoos without water/swarfega. It breaks down the gooey gunk.

Then rinse off with water, then wash rest of the piggies body :)

Hope that helps!

Ahhh i thought it might be something like that. I tried googling it but that didnt help lol
That explains why they always chase each other round sniffing everyones bottom!

I use baby shampoo on my pigs about once a month (animal shampoo gives jekyll and hyde dandruff?) sometimes they need a bath every couple of weeks because for some reason they insist on rolling around in their pee! *facepalm*

Thankyou, your very helpful :)

Its the grease gland. Sometimes in boars it can get a bit blocked. Just some swafega or washing up liquid will clear it. It will need to be done regurarly to keep them clear and to stop any infection from starting in there.

x.
