Hiya,

Trevor, who has pneumonia and is at home with us having antibiotics and anti inflammatories and is eating and drinking and moving (big difference to what he started at two days ago!), has started doing this thing where he stands up properly on his for legs and lifts his tummy off the ground. He then makes this weird sound that I’ve recorded and his ears go back and his entire body tenses. I’ve only seen him do this twice as I’m writing this, but had to pause because he did it again. He has had food before and after the episodes as well as drinking.

I uploaded it to YouTube here:

any ideas? He’s been to the vets twice in the past 3 days - would like to know if we need to take him again. Willing to pay anything.

After he makes the sound, so you check to see if he’s done anything? Sounds like he could be in pain while peeing or pooping. I think I’d take him to the vet to be checked, if they’ll see him.

As an aside, that’s too many carrots for one piggy. I’d do maybe a third of a carrot maximum. And not daily.

As far as I’m aware from checking behind him afterwards, he hasn’t been pooping or peeing whilst doing the action.

If you can’t get him to the vet then call them and tell them the symptoms.

The vets don’t have an email and it’s hard to describe over the phone.

You can still ring them and ask them if they have a device where you can send the video to them.

:agr: Also tell them he’s squeaking while toileting. And that nothing comes out, as far as you can see. I’d check each time he does it and see if anything has come out.

I agree with what others have said, that cry is pain and he needs to see a vet. Poor fella I hope he gets better soon.

Update! We rang the vets and they recommended some medication for constipation - he was given this around 3 hours ago and is currently taking little drinks when prompted and has peed once or twice, but the noise is still occurring and no poops have been found nor food eaten. Thanks for all your advice so far!

It’s good he is peeing but not if he’s not pooing. Do you know when he last did a no 2? Output is around 2 days behind input if I remember correctly. I’d call again if he still isn’t pooing.

that is a definite pain action and sound. If at all possible he needs a hands on exam by a vet. This is to check for some kind of obstruction. Poor little fellow. He’s definitely in pain in that video.

Day #3:

He’s had a few (4-5) poops. They’re small and not always fully formed. He is still drinking well and is more than happy to crawl into my lap rather than walking around. He’s spending all his time sleeping until I wake him up for his medications and, since he hasn’t eaten since yesterday morning, critical care as recommended by the vets. He has had the odd straining motion and squeak but typically sleeps now. He seems to be breathing normally, bar a little squeak every now and again that’s breathy and wheezy which no doubt is from the pneumonia. We were told that it might take a few days for the antibiotics to kick in, which we’re hoping it will soon.

I'm afraid that he really needs a hands on examination imminently by a vet. The lethargy is a bad sign

:agr: The lethargy is a worry. And so is the squeaking, irregular as it may be. Can you get him seen by the vet?

He’s been to the vets, had an injection for pain relief and to rehydrate him. He’s suspected to have a UTI or a stone so if he doesn’t pick up this weekend after those injections and the daily medications (3, two for which are two times a day) and the every two hours critical care, he will most likely have to be put down unfortunately.

@Siikibam He also has pneumonia and has refused to eat and drink for 2/3 days, has no energy despite being fed critical care every two hours and hasn’t managed to poop at all. If you could see him convulsing and struggling to breathe, you’d understand that he is not an otherwise healthy piggie right now. He’s had so many medications and treatments at this point that putting him through a surgery would only be harmful for him, not to mention the cost would be coming close to all my savings that I currently have for university. The medications he’s on are metacam, baytril and emeprid

Unfortunately, Trevor died half an hour ago of his own accord. We buried him in a pot with flowers and windmills. RIP Trevor.
