My male guinea pig, Kyper, is 11 months old. He is a lazy little guy but very fun to have around! We got him from a pet shop (because there are no shelters with guinea pigs anywhere near where we live) and he was in a small cage by himself. I think they may have been overfeeding him, because his bowl was filled high with food. (I have had Kyper for almost 3 months and Umi for 5)

Kyper was brought home to share a cage with his new brother, Umi. They adjusted quickly and have loved each other ever since.

A few weeks later I weighed Kyper and he was 1.97 pounds. It seemed normal, for at the time he was 9 months old. I weighed him a week or 2 later, but unfortunately lost the data. Then another 1 or 2 weeks after that I weighed him again, getting 1.13 pounds.

I was very worried that he had lost .84 pounds, but it was odd because he had been eating fine. I started feeding him more and have been in the process of switching his food. Last week I weighed him again, but he was about the same, gaining just 0.03 pounds. Another odd behavior is he tends to drink a ton of water but only if I "bottle feed" it to him. I am not quite sure how much he drinks aside from that.

Sorry this is getting to be quite long! Kyper has also had a cold lately. He sneezes often and has some darker colored snot on his nose.

Thank you for reading! I am busy with school so it is hard to monitor him so often. He seems to be acting fine aside from these, and physically looks like a chubby little piggy! Any advice would greatly help!

(Other Info) The food I fed him was VitaCraft VitaSmart Complete Guinea pig food and I am currently switching to Wild Harvest Advanced Guinea pig food.
They also have veggies almost daily. And always fresh water and hay. There bedding is Carefresh paper bedding.

The weight fluctuation you are seeing is perfectly normal.
It can be the difference between a full and empty bladder, so I don't think that is a major cause for concern.

But what I would be worried about is the cold that Kyper seems to be suffering from.
If he is sneezing a lot and has snot around his nose then he may well have a respiratory infection, which can be very serious in guinea pigs.
He may also be struggling to drink normally because he is congested.

I would recommend getting him to a vet as soon as possible.
Hopefully if it is an infection it will clear up quickly with the appropriate antibiotics.

It sounds like you are a very caring owner and Kyper and his brother have a great life with you.

Thank you very much! I will try to get him to a vet soon.
