Well I'm taking 4 of my pigs to CCT today. The vets near me are great with cats and dogs but rarely see guineas (except mine!), so are ok for routine stuff but next to useless with most other things.

So, I'm taking the 2 very wobbly girls from the poorly rescue lot (malnourished) as their legs have not improved and I'm worried how mobile they will be as they grow.

I'm also taking Sirius Black, who has lost a lot of weight and my vets can't find anything wrong with him.. he's only 600g, and I've tried everything. I've been waiting for him to be fit enough to travel, and have decided he is.

And then Zippy was supposed to be joining us because of a facial abcess (the reason for the appointment!) but it burst in the car on the way to my normal vets and looks like it's healing ok-ish - so I might leave him at home in the warm!

Appointment at 1 - wish us luck!

Good luck. I will be really interested to know about CCT as I have read about them for years. Is the lady still there ... Vanda or something like that?

Good luck Sophie I hope that they all have positive outcomes.

I have spoken to Vedra on the phone but its pretty far from me....update us later! good luck x

Good luck Sophie! I hope Vedra can help you with your piggies. How far is it from you?

I'm off to see Vedra on Monday with Lottie and Tuppy. Goldie, if there's any specific questions you have about the CCT just ask. I'd guess a fair few of us here have had some experience or other. Opinions differ strongly, but experiences tend to show new sides. I was there almost every week for the first half of this year, mostly for dental stuff, and have to keep going back every couple of months with Lottie. I'm also doing the RHA course with them.

Good luck! Vedra is a lovely lady, she had my sow Rose for a couple of weeks not long ago and she is fine now :) If there is something you don't understand she is happy to explain it for you and she does x-rays without knocking them out :)

I went to see Vedra a few years ago and I didn't have a very good experience and haven't been back since. If there was something seriously wrong with my guinea pigs I would rather take them to her than a vet though.

Well, just back from our day trip! When I arrived she was seeing to a hamster with a sore willy :red

The two wobbly girls Flash and Flame are sadly very affected by their early upbringing and lack of nourishment, which has left them with joint problems that will need managing, but it's unlikely they will improve further than they have done. They also both have very bad teeth (due to inbreeding or satin genes), poor Flash only has one tooth at the top (which must have only come out recently as she was ok on arrival...) and both will have on-going dental work required. Therefore these two girls will stay with me - a shame, as they had a lovely home waiting, but it's not fair to pass on those sorts of problems to a new owner (and a young child).

Sirius - Vedra suspects it might be a thyroid issue (he's lost half his bodyweight and is bright enough, and eating, but won't put weight back on). She's kept him with her to run some tests.

Vedra was great - I loved the sign by the gate as you walk in - 'NO CHILDREN!' - made me smile.

Will be taking the girls back in 8 weeks for their toofies and will be going on her dentistry course in the new year.

Satin guineas are bred for their shiny coat, which is very pretty .. but breeding satin to satin (I think!) can cause problems and they can have problems with their bones etc.

Can you give me an info on the dental course please!

Learning to do the dental work is a godsend. Vedra showed me how to do it a few years ago. The equipment is quite pricey to buy but over the years I have used it on a regular basis for mine and other peoples pigs and its been brilliant 8;) It means pigs dont have to make stressful trips to the vets to be put under anaesthetic for a dental :)

I work at a vets and I think if I can learn this then it would be a god send to our clients!

Well done Sophie - you made it there and back with no hiccups! I'm sorry to hear about the piggies with joint problems. Maybe potters tabritis might help. Natural products. Helps with stiff joints and has a mild pain relief in it. Helped my piggie with her arthritis. Hope the tests show nothing nasty for little Sirius.

Thanks I will try the tabritis- I've got some for myself! How much did you give?

Also has been suggested I use evening primrose... has anyone else used this with pigs? Again, what quantity?

I've got a labrador with arthritis and was wondering if pigs could have glucosamine supplements, that's what he has....

I gave half a tablet crushed in water daily. During the last month of my sow's life when things were more tough for her, I gave her a whole one crushed daily. Yeah I was tempted to give glucosamine but wasn't sure about it either so I stuck with the tabritis. Hope they help xx

Awww, thank you for asking, he's doing ok just waiting on some test results then we'll know if it's treatable and then he can come home. Captain Jack is missing his ship-mate!
