Right I recently as of yesterday took home a lone female 3yr old piggy.
She has been kept on shavings and I don't think she's ever had a bath!
There are a few things I need to ask the vet about but thought I'd mention here too just so I have some idea.

1) she has what seems to be baldness or thinning hair under her belly is this normal or could she have mites/fungal infection caused by the shavings taking moisture away?
2) her ears at the ends are crusty, could this be ear mites/infection?

3) she has on her front paw what seems to be an extra flap or dangly bit of paw pad skin. It does effect her walking and she seems to struggle on it.
Could this be bumble foot? It's not sore looking just pink and fleshly?

Any advice would be great but as I say will be taking her to my vets in the morning.
Thank you
Amy

Could be mites could also be hormonal, but lets deal with the mites, and see if the skin condition clears up before worrying about hormonal.. As for the extra skin on her foot, could be a spur, if which is the case, is the least of her worries at this time, i'm sure the vet can sort that out if you ask them :)
A bath in special insecticidal shampoo should help to kill the mites.. is she a good weight?

Well put it this way I can feel every bump in her spine and her ribs!
This isn't good is it?
Stupid woman who was at the time looking after her said she was fat and cut her food right down.
It's her Blumin hair that's making her appear to look big but she's not so the poor girl hasn't been getting the correct amount or good fresh veg n fruit.
She is fed on that guinea pig selective stuff in a purple bag. Is that ok?

Science slective is a great ood. Make sure she can have all she wants so she can put some weight on. The ears and hair thinning sounds like a fungal infection. The extra tag on her foot will be a spur. They can be cut back a little but be careful as they sometimes have ablood supply. Good luck with the vets and let us all know how you get on.

xx.

Rang up but can't get me in till 2.30 today.
So will let you know how she gets on.

Not a piggie expert so don't really know what to say just wanted to wish you and your little pig good luck at the vets today !

If you can get some weight on her, it'll go along way to helping her get her hair back, with being so thin, her immune system will have dropped, hence so much going on at once, she may well have both a fungal and a mite problem, which case she's gonna need a two pronged attack to get rid of both... Maybe introduce some probiotics too, to help keep her gut flora balanced at this taxing time, and plenty of timothy hay and tlc to keep her interested :)

She has a very good appetite and I've been giving her meadow hay. Hope this is ok?
She loves carrots, tomatoes, broccoli, kale, pear, apple and leafy salad as well as cucumber and celery.
I think the reason shes thin is due to not having plenty of dry left down or enough veggies.as the person thought she was fat.

I'll get the vet to weigh her in a bit.
What's a healthy weight for them?

Meadow hays fine, timothy hays more nutritious, my vet gave it to me when one of my piggies was poorly, and I have to say they prefer that to meadow hay (it is a tad more expensive, but I feed it from a hay rack, a bag lasts a about 4 days between my 5 piggies)..
I have burgess's timothy hay with herbs and Woodlands with dried carrots and apples pieces..

Right I'm back now.
Rosie doesn't have any mites nor fungal infection.
The fur missing from her belly is because she has been kept on damp bedding and has burned her fur away.
The skin is fine he said.

Her front paw isn't what we thought it's a normal foot I and the past owner thought she had a piece of skin but it's the actual paw pad as the other is the same. But she has urine burns from being kept on damp wet shavings and her poor feet are sore.

Her ears are full of black wax so I shall be cleaning these daily I've just done them now and she's had a bath with johnsons insecticidal shampoo. You should've seen the water afterwards!

I'm sure she feels better already.

Oh and she weighs 780g underweight or what! :(

But she is back home now with a new female friend a baby off preloved and they are getting on great. Rosie has been washing little Alice.
And I'll be getting a bigger cage for them very soon.

Thank you for that link.
I'll def get some Timothy hay for her.
Just for pets sell it near me.

Aww, I am so pleased she doesn't have anything more serious. She must have been living on damp bedding for a while to get those urine burns :( I am sure you will get Rosie in to ship shape condition in no time xx

Poor little thing she really has been neglected. It is so stupid to think a guinea pig is fat. It takes an awful lot to make a guinea pig overweight. They are meant to be chubby. The poor baby was kept in filthy conditions by the sound of it. I am so glad she is with you. I hope she gets back to good health very soon.

poor little love sounds like she has had a rough time, but she has fallen on her feet with you! well done x

It'll be a lot easier getting her right, without having to worry about mites and fungal infections.. is there any sort of lotion that can be used to help the inflammation on her skin? I have to ask, as I've not had dealings with urine burns...?

No the vet didnt give me anything. He said with the correct dry bedding her feet will get better themselves although I will bath them in boiled salt water cooled down.

Please meet rosies new friend,Alice

Yes like a teddy?
I used to have a teddy/Rex before with a smooth girl. Just like now lol

Hey there! I dont want to worry you, just rosie looks like a bit of an odd shape at the moment. This could be because of her being underweight, but i wondered if you could take a birds eye view picture of her on a flat surface, just to put my silly mind at rest.

Thanks ever so much.

The vets advise seems good, dry bedding will help her very much.
Another good things for piggies needing to gain weight it mushed up pellets (create these by pouring boiling water over some pellets and leaving to cool) Piggies love to tuck into these.

HTH

someone please correct me if I'm wrong-i certainly dont want to give wrong advice: i read that if you feed an underweight GP a small amount of avacado that it could help them gain weight. it could be worth looking into :)

Hi this is what she looks like from above.

Her fur does stick up as she's got teddy fur.

Yes I've got avocado as I give it to my rats about 3 times per week.
I saw that it's high in fat in the safe/dangerous food list.
