Off veggies & possible mild gut stasis

I just use the critical care aniseed one (which I have in stock at home) or for a bigger life or death battle, I order emeprid.
Hmm seems Bramble didn't get the memo then?! I always have the Dualcare in and usually give them a little every now and again (I mix Fibreplex in there for Bramble as he has always had softer poops even after numerous vet visits) x

Try the boys on your lap together and see how that goes and where that stimulates Bramble a bit more. Or mix in a little squashed banana.

Thanks very much, means a lot! You are all a massive help! x

You just have to try and see what works and what not for Bramble. Sometimes you have to resort to sheer force and shameless bribery.

Ha ha very much so! Bribery and force wasn't working this afternoon and he was getting stressed so I have left it for a little while, but he did eat some hay that I have next to us while we do the feed so that was good!

We use the emeraid sustain with mint. They seem to like it!

With regard to the metacam if the vet has said try it I would go for it, perhaps just for a few days to see if it makes a difference!

If he’s feeling unwell he might move away from food. My rainbow bridge boy Larry had spondylosis/arthritis in his lower spine and he did used to do a little squeak sometimes when he pooped, the vet did say it could be painful as the poop passed near that area but he did also have bladder problems which didn’t help.

We’ve had the blood results back & thankfully his kidneys didn’t seem too bad so they’ve given the goahead for the metacam so 1st dose has been given! There was slightly elevated levels of AST but she said that could be muscle or kidney? Also slightly minor electrolyte level, which could be stress or due to the critical care feed. Nothing she was worried about. I honestly can’t fault the vets at all, they’ve been amazing!

Awww poor baby Larry, sounds like he had more than his fair share of issues?! ❤️

I don’t know how everyone copes with all the different meds some pigs are on? I’m having to write down what he’s had & when as I’m going round the bend ha ha.

Thanks again for the replies & help, really helps so much when the stress levels are so high x

I quite often write it down at first but it soon becomes routine!
Sounds like a positive visit all round, great news really hope the metacam works for him ❤️👍
I have started writing it down but then I convince myself I wrote the wrong thing! I’m losing my mind ha ha!

Thanks, yes it was the best news I think we could have hoped for? He lost 32g from yesterday morning to this morning so I’m worrying a bit about that. I am still feeding him 4 times a day, know 30g is a normal swing but not sure how it goes when he’s being fed? x

I tape a meds and feeding time table to the back of a kitchen cupboard door. I also list the amounts of each med so I can refer to it as I prepare the syringes. My eyesight is not good so having it written in large numbers speeds the process up!
Ahh good idea! Will do that I think? Mine isn’t the best either so would help! He is doing a lot better but still lost this morning but he has been about lots!

Ideally he would be maintaining his weight but 32g as you say isn’t a huge loss. It’s good he’s been out and about though, hopefully that’s a sign he’s feeling better!
How much does he take per sitting?

I wasn’t very happy with the loss to be honest but I’m trying not to be disheartened. Yesterday he wouldn’t take the oxbow really, couldn’t get more than 3 at a time so I went back to the burgess dual care. Today I’ve done 6ml, 3.5, 4 and hoping to get another 6ml in before bed. Could do more but he has been eating pellets and hay today x

That’s great that he’s been eating some nuggets and hay! Fingers crossed he’s gained some weight tomorrow.

Lots of coffee for you then 😂 I’ve got everything crossed that he’s even better tomorrow x
Totally knackered this morning, didn’t get to sleep til 1.30, dog somewhere barking! Don’t even think coffee will be enough today! Plus he lost another 7g so he’s dropped under 1500g. Know it’s not much but today I really could have done with a maintain?

How is he today? 💐
He lost another 7g, can’t stop fixating on it? On the plus side his poops are now back to his inch long selves! It’s frustrating as when I noticed he’d stopped pooing & then eating he didn’t lose then? Guessing it was backed up poops? Thanks so much for checking in on him x

Hi

HUGS

The difference between a full and an empty bladder is about 10g so you are still within the maintain range, and the poo output is confirming that.

Please feel around his ribs: you should just about feel them if you are in the ideal weight range; if your piggy is overweight, then you cannot feel them at all and if they are underweight, then you can feel every single one. Feeling for the BMI can hopefully help you put any weight loss into perspective as to how significant it is.

Prioritise yourself today and make sure that you have regular naps, as much as you can during the day. It is amazing what lack of sleep can to do us, including fogging the brain.

As @Wiebke says, that 7g could just be the difference between a full and empty bladder, so he most likely has maintained his weight overnight. Normal poops are a brilliant sign! He’s going in the right direction for sure 👍

Thanks very much! I will try & keep thinking about that. He’s much quieter today though? Not as interested in veggies again? Thought once I got on top of the pain he’d feel better?

I will certainly check his ribs on the next feed / medicine in half an hour. I’m thinking he’ll be leaning towards overweight if I’m honest? He is usually very food oriented so it’s easy to spot when he’s not quite right?

You are right there, just went to write a birthday card for the mother in law & I made a mistake!

Thanks for your best wishes & knowledge.

Thanks very much, he’s just seems a bit off again compared to yesterday? Not as much interest? x

Please just make sure that you get enough sleep and rest yourself. The first rule of a carer is to make sure that they look after themselves because when they crash, who is looking after the one they care for? It is not selfish at all but just plain common sense.

If he is on the pudgy side, your boy can afford to lose 200g and still not being dangerously underweight. So please no nightly feeds.

Can you please remind us of his painkiller dosages? It could be that they may need a little tweaking.

The last feed I’ve been doing is 10 and the first is about 5.45.

Of course -
5:45 - Paracetamol 0.5ml & 0.16 cisapride
8:45 (8 on a work day) metoclop 0.8ml & 0.8ml metacam (dog)
2pm - paracetamol 0.5ml (this may have to slip to 4 if I have to stay at work all day)
6pm - cisapride 0.16ml
8pm - metacam 0.8ml
10pm - paracetamol 0.5ml & metoclop 0.8ml

Thanks, I feel more human after a nap & washed my hair. I really appreciate every word of support!

He is also bothering Fozzy for his poops, recently taking them straight from the “source”?

Pain relief looks good to me? 0.8ml of dog metacam is a decent amount, good to see a vet prescribing it! So often they don’t prescribe an adequate dose.
Eating Fozzy’s poops perhaps means he feels is missing something?

Is he getting any probiotics or have I missed that somewhere? Something like fibreplex or pro c.

Maybe introducing a new food to entice him with?

Thankfully the vets are really good , they have 4 with exotic experience / expertise. I can go up to 1ml but it was decided we would try a slightly lower dose 1st?

Yes sorry I am adding pro-c & fibreplex to the feeds.

I have sweet gem, romaine, butterhead, cucumber, baby corn, red pepper & the favs parsley & coriander x
