Off veggies & possible mild gut stasis

He has lost 42g from yesterday morning! I know I haven’t been getting enough supportive feed in him, only 30g but I thought that would be enough with how much he was eating? He was starving this morning & was wanting the syringe so I managed to get 10g in there! He definitely has the “heft” but I want to stop the trend! 🙁

I’m sorry he is still losing. Good luck getting more critical care in him today.

Remember you are doing all you can. ❤️
Thank you but I’m worried my best isn’t good enough? Just got another 7ml in there but I have to go to work until 2 when I can work from home & start things up again x

Your best is always good enough. ❤️

Bramble has to help himself too. Will he eat the critical out of a bowl/saucer?
It isn't though if I can't get him stabilised? He did eat a little bit off the spoon and was looking for the syringe to put in his mouth more. He honestly does seem to be eating really well in the cage, see plenty of stalks of hay sticking out of his mouth. Fozzy would love it if I popped the bowl in there with it in  x

Just to recap - he has kidney issues and arthritis in his knees?

He’s been on antibiotics (is he still on them?)
He’s on paracetamol (and metacam?)
Emprid and cisapride

What dosage? As it could still be a pain issue.

What is his weight now?

Sorry if you’ve already put this is the thread. I had a quick scan.

You’re doing brilliantly. ❤️

He does, though from the bloods they have said that his kidneys are doing ok at the moment?

He hasn't had antibiotics since around June time (was co-trim)

He is still on cisapride twice a day @ 0.16ml per dose
Paracetamol 3 times a day @ 0.5ml per dose
Metacam (dog) twice a day @ 0.8ml per dose
Metoclop now once a day @ 0.8ml (the vet advised dropping the second one last night)

He is moving around lots and doing his "naughty" noises as I call them and is definitely back to himself that way?

Thanks so much for the reassurance, was feeling really positive yesterday morning x

I’ve been on the rollercoaster of looking after a sick piggy. It’s not fun.

That seems like a good amount of pain meds.

I’m pleased he’s happy in himself though. Hopefully he will stop losing weight. See how the next few days go. ❤️

No it's not at all, I had this with him when he was 9 months old and he had antibiotics and they completely stopped him eating after just one dose and it took him 6 weeks to get eating properly. Though as far as I can remember he never lost like this?

I have had guinea pigs for 30 years and never had the issues I've had with Bramble (and poor Donnie 🌈). These are the 1st ones to live indoors as well!

I dread getting up in the morning to look at the scales x

This year has been bad for my piggies too.. Dental, bladder stone, PTS, eye problems x2, cyst, bladder stone removal and now a lump under chin!

Oh no, that is a lot of issues to deal with, sending love and healing thoughts!

Bramble has had 4 hay pokes this year? Sure he is trying to bankrupt me? x

Remember, you are looking at the overall amount of food, self-eaten and topping up that you can get into him over the course of 24 hours. Longer gaps don't matter; you just offer a bit more often over the course of the afternoon and evening. You have got all afternoon and evening to try to get another 30-40 ml of feed into him in about 3-4 sessions so you get to 50-60 ml, overall - which will take into account that he eat even less on his own if the lump continues to grow.

That seems feasible, doesn't it? ;)

It rather looks like a pain and or swelling issue that is restricting his food intake. :(

Thanks for "talking me down", he gets really grumpy but he is just going to have to deal with it?!

Thankfully he has no lump, just the arthritis and the kidney issue.

Honestly yesterday he always had some thing in his mouth, lots of ends of hay sticking out of his mouth! But he has been extremely active and even humping his brother again. x

Please don't panic.

Just offer him what he wants to eat. Kidney problems are unfortunately very painful and in guinea pigs without any effective treatment due to their different metabolism. Arthritis is treatable but also very painful.

Sorry, I am jumping around a lot between different threads in between trying to catch up with the cage clean whenever there is a bit of a lull in the rainfall after I have been unwell over the weekend. My short term memory has somewhat gone on an old people's bus trip to a surprise location, sitting next to my ability to multitask... Please correct me whenever I am wrong. Life with a brain tumour and the long term damage it has caused has its daily little pitfalls.

Thank you so much.

I will do, need more herbs but he has started eating all of his usual veggies! Got 11 ml in him half an hour ago! Wanted about 8 of those so thats good. Just worried abut future but that is my issues! The way he is moving around makes me confident we are on top of the pain (but I didn't know he was in pain in the 1st place I guess).

Aww honestly do not apologise, what you do is fantastic anyway without your health issues. Can't imagine how it must feel, thinking of you and sending my love x

Just to give a little update, we managed to get in 48ml over the day and he only lost 4g so I'm taking that as a good sign and he is now off the metoclop. However they have both decided that today is indeed "hump day". So I hoping he doesn't hurt his knees any more as it was a humping session that started all of this? Thanks to every one again x
