Ok well Furby is still not right and still not convinced it is an ear infection but seeing as she was so chirpy on the metacam and eating properly i decided to see if it was an infection and leave off going to the CCT for a 14 days assuming all stayed the same....

Well after cleaning out the cage i picked Jive up and where is testicle should be if he was not neutered, has swollen would say small plum sized and to just touch it causes him obvious pain, as it has come up in such a short period of time it is bound to be an abscess. I am pretty sure it was not there this morning unfortunately did not have him out the evening before but was not there wednesday definitely. So have phoned Vedra who has agreed to see them tomorrow morning.:)

So have cancelled plans to meet friends, phoned my mum to tell her to set up the hutch and packed my bags and all their meds and food and have jumped in the car for a 2.5 hour journey on a friday night. I was planning on some wine and a movie oh well...... 8...

Have also given Jive a dose of baytril in the hope it helps but what it really needs is lancing and cleaning out i think? Should i give him some metacam this evening or wait until he has seen vedra?

Sadly, abscesses are not an uncommon occurrance after neutering and can happen for months afterwards.

Baytril was a good idea. I would not give him metacam. Are you going to see Vedra tomorrow morning?

Best of luck with your trip and sorting out your two poorly piggies!

Hi wiebke, Yes we are seeing vedra about 10 am, They are not travelling that well but i think that is to be expected when 2 of them are grumpy cos they are not right. Jive had his op of the 1st of december! I thought he was out of the woods with regard to abscesses.....:(

I'm sorry to hear little Furby is still not right :( and now poor Jive :(
You are doing the right thing going to Vedra's :) Best of luck with them both for a diagnosis and treatment to get them both feeling better :)
It's difficult having to travel so far, I am almost 2 hours from Vedra, but having made the trip several times to her I would rather travel to see a competent guinea pig expert or vet rather than use my local vets who are not very knowledgeable - I get the impression that they guess what is wrong if they are not sure, and to me my piggies are so precious.
I have two recommended vets that I will go to if I need to - one is 2 and a half hours away and the other is 3 hours away.
Luckily I drive, but it is very exhausting.
I do however, feel relieved that my piggies are in best hands :)
Last time I went to Vedra's it took me 7 hours round trip because of road closures and accidents and I was nearly tearing my hair out :))

I consider myself very lucky to have parents who live less than 10 miles away from the cct it was even closer years ago! hopefully we will kill two birds with one stone and get both piggies sorted, just keeping my fingers crossed there is nothing wrong with cottonbud!

Oh no, what a worry for you. Sending healing wheeks to your piggies and I hope Vedra can work her magic.

Update

Ok well We will start with the good news Furby definitely does not have any teeth problems or an ear infection so is now being treated for fungal with daktarin oral gel, she also has a little bit of extra skin under her eyelid I forget what Vedra called it but it should not bother her and needs no treatment.:))

Jive has had to go in as an inpatient 8...as it is likely that he will need surgery to remove the abscess but it depends on what the vet says when he sees him after the weekend. It all depends on whether the abscess is encapsulated or not. I feel much better about leaving Jive for potential surgery than I did leaving Furby to get her teeth checked at the vets!

so I have the girls here at my parents with me and I will be staying with them till sunday, I am hoping rebonding the group is not going to be as stressful as last time! luckily I have no medical appointments myself this week.

On the positive note I have paid for the RHA course and will be spending the rest of the weekend reading the book!:)

I'm glad they both seem to be heading in the right direction now. It's stressful when one pig is ill, never mind two, I really feel for you. It is a relief when you know they're in godo hands and they'll be looked after well. You are lucky to have your parents living so close by the CCT so such a trip is doable at such short notice. :)

Fingers crossed for Jive and Furby.

Come on Jive & Furby. Get better soon for your mummy.

Yes it is great relief that we can jump in the car should we need to visit the CCT and have bed and cage ready when we get there, we got in at 11:45pm last night. I also feel so much happier knowing they are being treated by the CCT as i do not feel the need to double check what the vet has prescribed before giving it to them! I hope i am not without jive for too long i am missing the cheeky chappy already :(

AWWWW Poor Jive!

Wish I'd read this last night.

I hope he's back with you soon. Let us know as soon as you know.

I still want to go there and bring him home even though i know he is probably in the best place in the world for piggies! Furby is not keen on the oral gel at all! oh well she is on it for three weeks..... I am going to be in the bad books! as usual!rolleyes

Awwwwwwwwww I'm sorry to hear about Jive :( I'm sure Vedra will spoil him, she has had my Poppy and Peggy to look after for a week before on more than one occasion and spoilt them rotten, I watched her when she was looking at my girls and talking to them and she has so much love to give it's inspiring :)
Try not to worry too much :) I'm glad that Furby's teeth are ok, hopefully the fungal complaint will soon be gone :) x>> xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Your Piggie is in the best place with Vedra, so you know he will be getting the best possible treatment.

I signed up fot the RHA course last week, perhapse we should compare notes :))

Paul and Jeanette

Well got the call to pick up Jive this evening and have got him home! Many thanks to Laura for the lend of a cage! Well the abscess was huge and vedra removed between 60 and 70 mL of pus, luckily the pus was encapsulated but had grown inside before it started poking out! This was all done with a local anesthesia and it has now been packed with some special material forgotten the name already oops. I need to leave it well alone so as not to disturb the bleeding and he is going back to the CCT on tuesday and thursday evening for further cleaning. Till then he is on baytril 0.3 mL twice daily and nurofen aswell. He looks a bit of a mess but so glad he is home and fingers crossed for a swift recovery!

I am glad that you have your boy back - at least, he is in the best of care possible! Are you staying with your mum in Huntingdon until his treatment is finished?

PS: Laura is worth her weight in gold and deserves a medal in my biased opinion!

Really glad that you have your little man back at home with you. I wish him a very quick recovery! I really wish I was closer to Vedra- she sounds like heaven sent! x

So glad you have your little man home. Sounds like Vedra has done a wonderful job and I wish Jive a speedy recovery.
