I've run out of veggies for them and I'm completely skint till next week when I get paid.

We got paid early so my wage had to last 6 weeks, there's been the cost of
Christmas and on top of that I am looking after my friends cat. She went to Edinburgh for Christmas and ended up a couple of days after Christmas in ITU fighting for life with swine flu and is unlikely to be home till at least Friday 4 weeks after she left so I've been driving 4 miles each way to feed Zach, every day so that 8 miles a day.

However this is not a begging post, or even can you lend me a tenner post because my piggies are so important to me and come first I decided some months ago to have a "piggy pot" were I put bits of loose change for such an eventuality so my pigs never go hungry I now have over £15.00 in loose change enough for 2 weeks food and I will get paid before the 2 weeks is up so tomorrow I will head to the supermarket pour it all in those machines that counts your change and stock my piggies up with food. I am going late on as they usually have lots of bargains.

It saddens me that people give their piggies up because they can't afford them when with a little bit of planning and preparation they would manage fine.

When I get paid as I got paid extra for working Christmas I will replenish the piggy pot and by my boys some treats.

We're in a similar situation. My bf is the only one working atm so me and our 6 piggies depend on his pay packet. When we go food shopping we get lots and lots of yummy food for them * they actually eat healthier than us Haha. i always save abit cos i know money will be practically gone. The guineas are always thought about =)

Agreed, I don't think anyone should consider getting an animal unless you're prepared to take the best care of them possible including spending your very last quid on some kale! You're very sensible ;) I guess that's why they call it a piggy bank! ;)

That was good thinking having a coin jar for emergencies.

Just watch out though, if you use one of the coin machines in the supermarket as I've heard some charge for using them - I've never used one myself but heard they can charge 7 or 10%.....

Hope you get some bargains

x

If possible, don't use the machine which counts your change; they take a percentage - nearly 10%. Swindling the poor, I call that. Your bank may have a free count counting machine (Some HSBC and Barclays branches do, according to http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8288608.stm

Although it's usually the 1p, 2p & 5p coins we chuck in, as they are a pain, if you can try having a 20p jar, they add up so much quicker and are much more acceptable to shops. xx :)

We have a guinea pig money jar so everyone knows exactly what its for! It makes me happy when I see that others put there pigs first and make sure they are looked after.

I work part time as a bar maid and all my tips go into a piggy jar!

You could try asking local fruit and veg shops if they have anything they're chucking out going free or reduced. My local greengrocer saves veggies for me now that they would of otherwise thrown away. Every little helps. :(|)

I have a jar, every month when I get paid I put my Bonus in it for my pigs fund until it gets too a certain amount, and then I'm happy that I can deal with any emergency that may arise.

I don't like the idea of being in the position of saying, what do I do? I have no money! :x

I have an emergency piggy bank fund as well.

Isn't it lovely!

Just to add, I know my local HSBC and Natwest branches have machines to put your change in and it goes straight to your bank account and doesn't charge you like the supermarket ones do.

DONT USE THE CHANGE MACHINES THEY RIP YOU OFF!
I used one once in Morrisons. I counted all my 1p and 2ps and I counted it to almost £40 but when I put it into the machine it only came up to about £25 and it wouldnt return my cash when I felt ripped off! So I now get the little bags from my local bank and count it out myself and take it to my bank.

I agree totally about the change machines. Banks really don't mind when you take change in to them either. They deal with loads of the stuff!

I have a big fat green dragon in the kitchen which gets filled with everything but pound coins from my purse at least twice a week. Now that really adds up and is really useful. It's nice to see that others have the same idea.

Same as my piggy fund!:))

I want one of those huge money bank bottles, the waist high ones - BM bargains has them, so does pound stretcher.

The self service machines in Asda will take all your pennies.
