Teenage Guinea Pig
My gorgeous old boy Fred (he's about 6) hasn't slowed down, running up (and occasionally down) stairs, getting in with the girl pigs (although he's not quite fast enough to catch them) but today we had a bit of a scare. As my sister was putting him back into his cage after floor time, he got a bit over excited and decided to wiggle free and jump the rest of the way. It was only a foot or so, and has probably happened a hundred times before with nothing going wrong, but today...
As soon as he started to move after he jumped, I knew something was wrong. His left back leg was dragging behind him when he walked, and although he didn't make a noise, he was obviously uncomfortable. After ringing around trying to find an emergency vet (by now it's gone 2.30 in the afternoon) he was using the leg, but as he had gone very quiet and just wasn't himself, we went along to the vets anyway.
Turns out he'd had a probable spot dislocation which had resolved itself, but an anti inflammatory pain killing injection later and he was as bright as a button and puttering around the consultation room investigating the animal smells.
An impressive vets bill later, he's now snuggled up with brother George enjoying some kale. Needless to say, he'll be putting himself back into the cage from now on!
