well i have just done my boys nails and i was so nervous as this was my very 1st time in doing it. It was so scary as i didn't want to hurt them. But i am so relieved that i actually done it by myself and i never cut them so i am well cuffed ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I did mine the other day, its scary for teh time lol :)

well done O0

I put doing mine off for agggess but when i did it i was like 'ehhh hey thats not too bad', then wandering round the house trying to find things to clip ;D

Ive cut my piggies nails for ages,i darent imagine how much vets charge for it

I cut the dogs nails too but theyre HUGE and hes such a pussy for a big dog,it gets to the point where i get him on his back and sit on him on the floor to hold him down,it doesnt even hurt him but OMG he throws his toys, lol

I didn't realise I could do it myself, could someone please tell me what I need, are there special clippers for piggies,I have a set for large dogs and puppies ,but even these would be way to big,any advice greatly recieved,

How often do they need to be trimmed

Everyone will have their own way ,but I trim my piggies nails when I bathe them ,so every 4-6 weeks.I use clippers I bought from my vets, expensive but very easy to use.I expect normal nail clippers would work well too.Oh and to help keep them still I cuddle in a towel ,and have some tasty veg close by...Light piggy nails are easy as you can see the difference in colour in the nail, but dark nails are tricky so I always cut less on those.sx

I use normal clippes but the ones with the long handle, and I agree with sallym, the black nails you have to be very careful with!

Well done. I use human nail clippers, I found other types to big and not as easy to use. O0

I cut my piggies claws today, he is a bit of a fidget. I use clippers made by surepet. They have a guinea pig shaped holder so that you can put them on the fridge door, a good idea as they work as a reminder. I have dog clippers aswell but they were to big for cutting piggies claws.

try to have some blood stopper at hand with a cotton bud , I've been mine for years but every now and again they will move and be warned the nails do bleed a lot but this stuff its a yellow powder if you dip a damp cootn bud in the powder then hold it on the bleeding nail it stops almost instantly I would never clip thier nails with out it

Where would you get this blood stopper from? I've got to do some nail clipping soon on our guineas (well not Rosie but all the others could do with it) and this sounds like a good idea, I'd be much more comfortable knowing I'd got this to hand just in case, although I do try to be mega-careful, but you know what they're like wriggling

everyone should have this in their medical box it stops any bleeding amazing stuff, I found it can go hard if opened then not used for a while but it can be broken down again

Thanks everyone for the advice, have the blood stop already, keep it for the dog, will get hubby to hold them in a towel today and give the girls a trim :)

way to go you! :)

well i am so glad people understand what i went through last nght. Well there was no bleeding so i must done well. i am going to get some of that stuff thats stops bleeding just in case.

How often do you do your guineas nails?

Do rabbits have the same nails as guineas as my neighbour has a rabbit and now i got the clippers i might be doing the rabbit too.

At least it will save vet money ;D

i might put a couple of pounds aside every time i do their nails as the money will come in use for any vet treatment they might need.

I do my guineas when they need it, which is about every four to six weeks. Rabbits with white nails are easy to do, however, rabbits with black nails are not. The amount of times I have known an experienced rabbit owner catching the quick on a rabbit with black toe nails is. ::) :)

well done, must have been a relief :)

i havent had to cut my piggies nails yet but i have cut birds, hamsters and dogs nails in the past, so hoping it wont be too bad, depends if figet then it will be hard.

I'm taking holly meggie lilly and max to the vets for theses doing in spring back week and all 8 babies will get theres done when there to the kennals in juile and the cat too
