Hi all I have two boy piggies and I found they have mites I'm new to this and I'm wondering if there's hay with no mites around please help thank you

If you haven’t already, ensure you see a vet for the right prescribed course of treatment dosed by their weights (don’t be tempted to use pet shop parasite treatments as they aren’t strong enough).
I’d recommend you get some F10 so you can disinfect the cage and throw away anything that can’t be disinfected.

You do need to throw away any hay and get more. It isn’t quite a case of being able to tell you what hay doesn’t have mites. Imported hays can have a greater risk though.

The guide below explains more about dealing with hay mites.

With the correct treatment they will be gone in no time. My boys have had mites and they usually clear up quickly.

I've been vets and the treatment has been put on the boys and new hay has been ordered. They also had their nails cut they wasn't happy the noise out of them did scare me though the vet said some piggies are drama queen's 🤭

That’s good.
Did they get a xeno treatment?
Did the vet tell you to go back for the second and third treatments?

Yes, some are quite dramatic!

Lucky the vet said they had a very small case of mites and they said the treatment they given is fine only once I'm still new to this so hopefully that's okay but I'll keep an close eye on them

There are some treatments which do cover for longer, but xeno is the most commonly used.

(For info - with a xeno treatment, they need three treatments. Xeno doesn’t kill the eggs, only hatched mites. So the first treatment kills the mites. The eggs then hatch and the second treatment kills those mites. The third treatment catches the stragglers to ensure no more eggs arrive.)

I'll definitely be calling the vets about this thank you so much. ☺️

How are your boys doing? I'm reading your thread because unfortunately I found mites on my girls tonight. 😫
And now reading more it's actually lice, we can see they are crawling bugs. Which in a way is a relief...didnt want to think it came from their hay. The search feature on the forum is awesome!

Please do see a vet for the correct treatment, and make sure to disinfect and clean everything.

You should also look to strengthen their immune systems by giving some extra vit c veg for a few weeks to boost them.
