babybear

Right, I've not posted in a while as my P.C has been playing funny .

It is about 2 months since Toffee died and I've kept Treacle on her own to see who she gets on.

She's eating and drinking fine and is getting handled or out and about pretty much every other day but she's not quite herself so I've decided to get another.

I really would rather get a rescue piglet than buy one but SSPCA have nothing - they did get some girls in the last week but all have been reserved already.

Thistle Cavies didn't have any females ready for rehoming and I couldn't see anything on adtrader.

I really don't want to leave her for much longer!

Should I just go to Pets at Home and get her a young sow for company?

Not really sure what to do for the best! :-\

I wouldn't. I know a lot of people are against p@h because they feel you are giving money to them, plus you are creating demand for more animals etc but that isn't my main worry.

My main problem is the illnesses these animals come with. URIs, fungal, mites, abcesses etc. You might bring home an animal you think is healthy and it infects Treacle or itself gets very ill.

I know adtrader pigs also have this risk, which is probably why I would never pick up pigs from adtrader/freeads unless I thought they were in great danger or it was a big worry to me. If I brought any pig like that home it would have to go in a seperate room, quarentined, treated for everything (at a cost to me) and if I had those kinds of resources/time/money I would already be rescuing animals.

Having said that I can't be hypocritical as I have bought an animals from p@h in the past, however this was before I realised how many rescue animals were out there. It's up to you, do what you feel is best, but if you don't get a pig from a rescue, quarentine it :)

Thanks.

I had a look in p@h today and they only had 2 sows.

One does not look very healthy at all and the other does not look young enough to be away from it's mother so I'm at a loss what to do now.

I will contact SSPCA and Thistle again just to flag that I'm still looking for another sow incase they've forgotten about me.

Thanks

Please please please hold out! Don't give P@H your money when there ARE homeless piggies around. Keep an eye out on the likes of www.gumtree.com for free to good home piggies but you absolutely MUST quarantine them for at least 3 weeks because there is no guarantee they are healthy.

Where in Scotland are you and I'll keep an eye out for you too.

welcome from us in oz :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: so sorry about sweet toffee 0:) 0:) 0:) sending you and treacle big hugs, good vibes :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: have you asked your vet if they know of any? girls send :-* :-* :-* OH's great great grandfather came from lanarkshire somewhere. wishing you luck and thinking of you and treacle. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Thanks Chloe! :)

I've emailed Thistle Cavies again to see if they have any available yet.

I've got a spare cage and a spare room so it's not a problem to quarantine them and TBH I'd probably keep them in separate cages for a couple of weeks until I was sure they'd be ok together (Treacle is quite dominant - not nasty but she just likes to let everyone know who's boss!)

Thanks.

I got in touch with Thistle again and they may have a piggie for me but they want to keep her until the end of the month to make sure she's not pregnant.

Fingers crossed it works out! ;D
