Ohmi and Faradi meeting for the first time

So Ohmi's post op six weeks are finally over, and the pigs are in the neutral bonding zone as we speak! This is my first cross gender bonding and I'm biting my nails off here as we speak, oven gloves ready to go... :yikes::yikes::yikes:

When we put the pigs to the pen, Ohmi immediately started humping and chasing Faradi. Faradi tolerates the humping for a while, but then tells Ohmi off. I've seen Faradi nipping Ohmi's ear and her humping him too. Occasionally they take a short break and lie down away from each other, and then the humping and chasing continues. Once in a while both stop to munch some hay.

As I said this is my first cross gender pairing so I have no idea how intense humping is still okay and what is not. I'm obviously very nervous here! There's also been some teeth chattering by Ohmi and submission squeals by Faradi. Some calming words for both the pigs and me would be very welcome!

Acceptance has happened when Faradi let herself be humped by Ohmi. the chasing, nipping and humping by Faradi are part her assuming leadership. Resting together means that they are both happy with each other and how their group is working out.

Thank you so much for your reply! I'm relieved to know that this means the initial acceptance has happened. I was a bit worried of Faradi showing signs of assumed leadership, as Ohmi is quite dominant too. Ohmi took the top pig position from late Voltti last year when he hit his teenage hormones.

Now after 2+ hours in to the bonding, Ohmi has calmed down a bit and not humping Faradi all the time now. I haven't seen Faradi showing her signs of dominance after the first hour, but instead I hear a lot of hopefully submission squeals from her. The pigs are also spending more time close to each other laying down or eating. The first hour was constant humping every time the pigs were actually close enough for Ohmi to attempt it. So I'm hoping we are heading to the right direction, fingers crossed!

Right now I'm seeing two pancakes, even the heads were down before I got the picture:

Congratulations - it sounds as if all has gone well.
I’m sure they will both be very happy with each other’s company

Looks like Ohmi is gaining back the leadership slot then. It can shift to and fro a bit during this phase, but they are obviously past the hierarchy establishment and well into the dominance phase now. Faradi sounds feisty enough to tell Ohmi when she's had enough, which is a good sign!

You can move them to the cage anytime; just leave out any hideys until Ohmi has calmed down.

Thank you again, this is really reassuring to hear :) I've just scrubbed their cage clean and put fresh bedding. Planning to leave out all hidey houses for the first night and hang towel canopies for cover like I did in the bonding pen. Moving the pigs to the cage next.

I'm so relieved that the worst part of bonding seems to be over! Thank you all for your support! :yahoo:

All the best with settling them in at their forever home. I am sure that Ohmi thinks he's landed in heaven! :tu:
 
A quick update after a couple of days of living together!

Things have settled down a lot and the pigs seem to be enjoying each others company. Ohmi popcorned so much when he was placed in the big cage again, the divided version really was too small for him. Faradi has become braver and more laid back now that she sees Ohmi not being afraid of everything. There's still the occasional humping-chasing spree, but it doesn't look too rowdy.

Here the pigs are settling in the cage under the canopy of the first night.

Here Faradi got scared of something and took refuge in the hidey Ohmi was already in. At first I thought it was only Faradi curled up, but that's actually Ohmi's butt in the picture! :))

It sounds perfectly normal and par for the course - and like a very happy bond! :wub: :tu:

With my it was my 5 year old lady Tesni to open her motherly bosom for 5 months old skittish Gethin to find refuge on, but they remained very much in love for 2 years until Tesni died earlier this year.
 
This is such a lovely thread. So glad that this very handsome couple have decided to cohabit. Well done x
