Amelia Jane and Peronel are coming up to five now. Please could somebody tell me how guinea pigs change when they get older. I want to know if my girls are changing as they are older or for something else. They certainly sleep more and Amelia Jane is quite grumpy. Here is a picture of them:

My eldest as a child lived to 8 and as an adult my eldest lived to 6 or 7. I found they slept more, were a bit less active and drank more water, other than that, not too much, they just slow down a bit a liked to cuddle more (altho some piggies prefer to snuggle in their cosies and can be grumpy about being handled lol)

As they're getting older I would just be more aware of the weather, like keeping them out of drafts and cool in heat. Drafts is the main one so they don't get anything nasty like a chest infection. I drape a blanket over the cage at night and I used to leave the heating on low on the day, much to my OH annoyance lol!

Ah so that is why they are grumpy when I pick them up! Thank you very much.

Well, if I'm looking at Wallace ( 4-5yrs) and Rocket (3 months) I'd say Wallace does sleep more than Rocket but as for grumpy, he's never been terribly out-going anyway but speaking from experience I think we all get a bit grumpier towards middle-age when we're tired or achey. I can't really comment on Yoshi and Moonpig ( also 4 -5 yrs ) as we only got them recently so I can't compare the current behaviour ( yes, they do sleep a fair amount but always come alive for food and a folded piece of newspaper! lol! ) with how they were when they were younger.

So sleeping more seems to be common then. Poor Amelia Jane is always trying to sleep and moaning as the others play near by!

Awww, just make sure she's got somewhere she can escape to and hide when she wants to snuggle and sleep.

Problem is she choses to put her head in a tunnel and sleep in the middle of the room rather then a bed or cabin!

Treacle is 4 and 3 months, and although she has started to sleep more, she seems still the happy popcorning piggie when she is out doing follow my leader around the flat:)) In fact I think she's mellowed quite nicely:)

I notice that the double chin gets smaller with age too, she has lost a bit of it, but has maintained her portly bum, and looks fantastic for her age:(|)

Lol! She's never going to enjoy the quiet life doing that! :)

Aww, she's lovely. Somebody tell Yoshi's double chin it should be getting smaller...it doesn't seem to know about that....:)

Peronel has recently lost her chubby cheeks and double chin too. I did not realise it was to do with age. Your little one looks gorgeous.

Bart (nearly 6 years) takes it easy now, he lies down whilst the girls Angel (18 months) and Lola (6 months) run round him. He seems to like the attention the girls give him. ;) I don't what he's gong to be like if the new baby is confirmed to be a boy as I suspect!

My little boy shown in pics below has recently turned 7. Smudge his friend shown in the last pic died in March aged roughly 6 yrs 8 months. As they've got older they slowed down a bit (Fudge used to do laps of the sofa at 100 miles an hour), sleep more and last few months he's definately got a bit grumpier. Also from being 6 he's had teeth problems, a runny nose because of the teeth issues, and in last few months has developed cataracts. Having said that other than that, touch wood, he's quite bright and still loves to run around and his food. I think he still have peripheral vision at the moment, he doesn't have any problems moving around.

Oh he is gorgeous. x) My girls are not even five and are slowing down and more tired. I wonder why that is.

Coming up to 5 is quite old for a piggie, some don't make it to that age.
