My 2 girls Aglaia and Anoush are around 6 and a half years old.

The past week Anoush lost weight and last night I noticed she didnt come out for her night veggies, she was looking very withdrawn and wasnt interested in eating her hay, she seemed reluctant to be picked up and I also noticed she had a poop halfway stuck out.
Took her to the vets today and my lovely vet says she has a large internal mass and the best thing for her would be for her to be pts on monday.
I have her over the weekend, armed with diferent pastes, recovery sachets and painkillers, hopefully to ease her and maybe brighten her before saying goodbye.

Her sister Aglaia was also diagnosed with an internal mass but as she is still happy and bright I have a little more time with her, apparently intestinal tumors are quite comon in older guinea pigs which I did not know :[

This is my first time caring for ill piggies and would appreciate advice from other guinea pig owners

So very sorry to hear such sad news I dont have any advice just love and enjoy her in this time you have left together. Hugs and wheeks to you both. x

aww I'm so sorry hon, i havent any advice either, just the same as already said, make the most of your time you have left together and love your baby and make her warm and comfy.

i think six and a half is a great age, sadly i have lost all my piggies very early in their lives.

My heart goes out to you, and my thoughts are with you this weekend x x>>

I am so sorry; I just lost my four year old neutered boar to an abdominal tumor. It was hard to see him going downhill bit by bit, but thankfully, he wasn't in any amount of pain so he stayed with me until the end.

Keep her as comfy and pain free as you can; don't try to force anything down her throat if she isn't inclined to eat. Take your hints whether she likes to be fussed over or not.

BIG HUG

Took some pictures of Anoush and Aglaia tonight, Anoush is the white and tan girlie on the left, Aglaia was grooming her. piggie love.
She seemed a tiny bit perkier as she licked my nose a few times when i was cuddling her which she didnt have the energy to do this morning.
Just want to make sure she goes in the best way I can manage for her :[

I'm very sorry. It's really hard putting down your piggies. At least she won't suffer. :...

Very lovely picture of the two girls.

Anoush has perked up the teensiest bit over the weekend, enough that she has been enjoying being syringed the supreme science recovery food and gently nipping me when I wasnt going as fast as she would have liked.
Have had to hand feed her everything though and offer her water every few hours as she hasnt moved from her pigloo, she did venture out a few steps earlier to eat a veritable feast of cucumber and curly kale and banana :]
Think shes very tired but am glad to have had this weekend with her.

I'm scared for this night to be over, I dont want to have to lose her even knowing it wouldnt be fair to keep her. Just feel so sad and heartbroken

So sorry to hear about your piggies. Lost my Rogue last month due to an internal mass - see my previous posts if you want lots of detail which I think would be off topic for me to put here. I know how hard it is, you are giving her the best care possible and she knows it. If I can help feel free to pm me xx

I'm so sorry for your situation I think it's best when we don't know, what I will say if you think the time isn't yet you don't have to pts. I know from previous experience when the time is upon you, you know.

To me it's the last act of kindness for our beloved pets. Good luck I know just how hard it is.

good news xx>>> my vet had a better feel of her tummy today as it wasn't so sore and thinks Anoush may be suffering from severe impaction and bloating, possibly not an internal mass though can't be sure.
As the bloating has lessened and she has brightened a tiny bit there may be a little but of hope so am going to keep nursing her and she how she is day by day.
The meds are 0.16 metacam daily, fibreplex probiotic twice daily, 5ml glucose solution injection once daily and as much recovery liquid feed as she wants.

Only thing is I have a phobia of needles and usually faint ") so that will be a challenge, think I can overcome it as its so important for my girlie *positivethoughts*

thank you for being so sweet, it has really helped

Great news! Hope she doesn't have the mass. I faint at needles too, but it's funny how you get over things when it is for your piggies! Sending good thoughts your way xx

awww thats better though, hope shes ok and not too uncomfortable, sending positive vibes for her xxxxx

All sounds good - but why the glucose [*]injecton[/*] rather than an oral admin?

Might be worth going back to vets and asking for an alternative way of giving glucose meds in view of what you say about needles.....and to be quite honest, very few vets are/should be happy to let owners inject piggies unless they are fully experienced and have demonstrated their capability in front of the vets first
(sorry if you are experienced - didn;t mean to imply otherwise - but I always "do the first one" in front of the vet to make sure they are happy with my technique before i take the needles/meds/piggie away)

Moving on to the diagnosis of bloat/impacton rather than a mass.....only an X ray or ultrasound will show a mass - despite what the vet "may feel on palaption". Even an X ray can be misleading -My piggie Beechie was diagnosed with a big tumour on X ray - when the vet opened him up it wasn;t a tumour at all, it was distension of the gut owing to gas/bloat (starts to sound familiar I think?)

Zantac can sort out a piggie irregular guts movement problem - 2mg/kg once daily. Please talk to your vet about this and if necessary I will give you my vets phone number so your vets can talk to them. Believe me, zantac is a wonder-drug for "grumpy guts" piggies with bloat/ileus/poor gut movement and they can make a full recovery (albeit they may have to be on a maintenace dose for the rest of their days to ensure regular movement)

I am so pleased the tumour possibility has receded......that's really good news as any "grumpy guts" can easily be sorted with regular zantac.

Good luck

I'm so sorry to hear that you've lost Anoush - I've been following her story, hoping that you'd have a good outcome. So sad.

Arrr so sorry love, rip Anoush..maybe she has gone to take care of the little baby with the missing leg...safe journey to the bridge sweetheart

Thinking of you x>>

Pebble, I think she prescribed it as an injection as Anoush was quite weak and already getting a lot by mouth, will ask her on monday when I take my rats in.
Been going to cestria for about 8 or more years so the vets know us pretty well, I trust them not to ask me to do anything I shouldnt be doing for my pets, in the case of the injection it was mind over matter basically, thank you for your concern, sadly didnt get to ask about the other meds you mentioned.

Anoush went quite peacefully at the end, just knew she was too tired to go on and cuddled her until she passed, it was hard when she squeaked a few times in discomfort as her body shut down but that didnt last for long and she looked very relaxed :[
Put her in the cage with Aglaia which I don't usually do but had read here that it might be helpful for guinea pigs, she seemed very confused and groomed Anoush all over then after a while went into her pigloo. Am waiting for a homecheck about some cagemates for her but its quite hard to think about that right now.

Thank you all for your replies *hugs* Feel a bit numb and miss her a lot already xo
