Hello! I had two perky pigs who I really loved, and unfortunately the oldest (a beautiful brown mutt) died today, to what i could only say is old age.

She left her hutchmate here alone, and I am not really looking to buy more guineas. Right now I am only in highschool, and would like the pig out as soon as possible so she doesn't have to be alone for longer than she needs to be.

I am also from australia, a place that is seriously lacking in rodent shelters. What should i do? I don't particularly want to resort to giving her to a pet store but that might be whats needed.

Hi! I am very sorry for your loss. What state are you in? There are some good guinea pig rescues.

It may be best if you rehome the remaining piggy as you are about to start an important part of your life.

If you live near Oregon, I would recommend the Portland guinea pig rescue. I live in Seattle and I got my piggy there.
@Rochester Piggy - the Op is in Australia - bit of a trek

@Kylie80 - Is in Australia and so is @Glynis although I haven't seen her kerplunking recently? They may have some more knowledge but need to know at least which area of Australia.

@Johanna - sorry for you loss and hope you find a solution for your remaining piggie. In the meantime, the piggie may benefit from some extra TLC and perhaps a soft toy (no plastic/button eyes or nose) to be with.

Yes Australia IS seriously lacking in guinea pig shelters although I have found out recently Queensland has at least two in the Brisbane area and I have yet to see a pet shop that has rodents in their adoption section or very many adoption sections of any sort in pet shops except the bigger chains. What state are you in? Do you have a RSPCA near you? If so perhaps you could give them a call to see if perhaps they will take her or perhaps they might know of a rescue you can take her too.

Hello! sorry for the delay, I think i've decided to keep her and get her a friend. For the meantime I'll use your advice @lauraboara , and place a stuffy in with her. she has an outdoor hutch too, I just hope she'll be alright until we can find her another friend.

I live in south australia, they aren't to friendly to pigs at all here

Sadly, South Australia doesn't have any guinea pig rescue near you at all. The closest is in Melbourne. :(

Glad that you are thinking about keping her and getting her a friend!

We have got lots of guides at the top of our various Care sections, but you are always welcome to open a thread in the appropriate one. Members with experience in that area are keeping an eye on the sections they can contribute to.
Here are some guides that you may find helpful for getting a new guinea pig and bonding:
Importance Of Quarantine (if you get a baby piggy, you need to weigh up the need for companionship against the risk of having to treat both piggies)
Sexing Guinea Pigs: How to Sex a Guinea Pig (please always double check the gender of any guinea pig before bonding)
Illustrated Bonding / Dominance Behaviours And Dynamics
Sow Behaviour

Sorry for your loss, I would have her if I wasn't in England
