I was just thinking about this tonight. Do senior guinea pigs look older? I have a 10 year old lab cross and he went grey as he got older. Wondering if this happened to pigs as well?

lol I don't think so. The only difference I've ever found is size. Good question though ;D

No they do not ever look older as in going grey. They always look just like an adult piggie.

Piggies do actually look older and many of them fade in colour as the years roll by.They also get extremely bony when they are really old.

I disagree. I've had many old piggies (I have two six year olds right now) and I've never seen that happen. The two I have now are very vibrant in color and they are definitely not bony! Chubby little things in fact.. ;D

I think it depends on how well your piggie is :) I have found that Duke's colouring has changed but he's not got 'gray' hairs ;)
He has mellowed a bit but still can be a cheeky boy :smitten:

Yer... my dog went grey as she got older :(
I think with pigs they just get more mellow and lazy... not really skiny I dont think.. it depends onthe pig I would say :)

because I know the age of my pigs I might not notice it much but i do agree some do get lighter in colour and just get a look about them of being elderly dipstick looks elderly, its hard to describe but he just does so does Jinx his run mate 2 elderly old men, and squeak went slightly grey when she got older she was almost 8 when she died some do and some dont maybe down to breeds and genes, and yes although dippsys coat is lovley he has got slightly bony but is not unwell

Do you think light coloured agouti pigs might go a bit grey? Just because of their colour?

not sure you would notice the colour grey in a light coloured agouti to be honest my squeak was a black self qnd her grey really showed up plus her eyes got an older look about her as does dippys

As Maisie got older her eyes showed her age and her hair was more 'brittle' looking, she also had more pronounced hip bones but she was healthy and a good weight. Poppy who is only a year younger but different breed, doesn't show her age at all, I think it just depends on the pig...

i have 2 sows that are both just over 5, and neither of them is lacking in the fat department lol they are both solid girls, their fur is as its wlays been morgan my black one has lovely soft fur with a sheen to it, i have noticed all my piggies do seem to get lumps and bumps as they have got older, both my ladies now have i think lois's may be cancer as she has lots of little bumps around her body but i personally feel that surgery is not the best way for her, considering her age and how much of her body would be taken away in the lumps id rather she just lived it out, she still acts like a normal pig, eats for england, wheeks for england! and morgan has just delevoped a little fatty lump but gucci had a mammory tumour and when had surgery she went downhill after that and its put me off, especially given the age of my two older ladies, i dont think they would survive/completely recover.

I have not noticed to much about their colouring but I do find after about 5/6 years of age they do seem to get smaller and thinner.

:-\ :-\ :-\ Only ever had boys and no they didn`t get grey, just thinner as age creeps on........ :-\ :-\ :-\

Tonni has flecks of grey in his hair :)

It was hearing about how old Tonnie was and his colour that promted me to ask. I thought grey would stand out a little bit more! :)

Awwww :)

Yeah he's black and now has grey on his nose, tiny bit under his eye area, and a few on his back! LOL

I think there is a Hugh difference betwen older guineas and younger, in my experience the older ones are much more intense with their love lay out, and they are much wiser in not bitting your fingers when foods about ;D

mine is well hidden with a magic bottle, maybe GG will make a guinea hair dye lol ;D no I love them as they are, old bony squint eyed what ever they are all perfect to me :smitten:

I havent ever noticed any change in their colouring, their appearance does change slightly though, its difficult to explain. To give you an idea of what an old piggy looks like here are 2 of mine, both rapidly approaching their 9th birthdays.

You wouldn't guess they were that old, Elvis looks great
.
I had two black piggies and as they got older they got some white hairs. Tiger who is brown and ginger is looking lighter and this also appeats to be due to a sprinkling of white hairs.

I believe in depends on the guinea with colouring and going bony, however, I generally think you can just tell the difference between a young pig, an adult pig and a senior pig, it's hard to explain. ;)

I like to think I can tell too :)

Paula (vet) said that Tonni has an old man look about him!

Yeah, that's they sort of thing I mean. I suppose it is just a look about them. O0
