I rescued my guinea pig Atticus a few years ago from a pet store who just received him literally minutes before from his previous owner who no longer could care for him. His nails were so overgrown that he could barely walk and his hair (he's a long hair) was matted everywhere. After cleaning him up, we brought him to the vet who estimated his age around 3 or 4 years old.

Now, he is around 7 or 8 years old which I know is pretty old for a guinea pig. Recently he's started to slow down a bit but a few days ago I noticed him making these awful choking noises when he's just bumming around his cage. He has never choked while eating or anything. He is still eating (although he doesn't want his greens anymore), drinking, and going to the bathroom, and is still around the same weight. No crusty eyes or signs of a URI, although he hasn't been his usual vocal and active self (I'm just chalking that one up to old age though). Looked in his mouth and all seems fine. I'm really at a loss for what's wrong with him. We scheduled a vet appointment but the soonest they could see us is on Wednesday. I'm just worried because the noises happen every 15 minutes or so now. :/

Here's two videoes of him making a noise and lurching, usually the noise comes out more in a "cough" form but I wasn't able to record a video of that exact noise. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forum.

Atticus is a little cutey!

I cannot tell you what this noise is, it's not something I've ever heard before. Hopefully someone with a bit more experience will be be along soon who can help.

Where abouts in the world are you? Someone may be able to recommend a "cavy savvy" vet who can see you sooner, based on your location.

Is he pooping ok? Eating ok?

This sounds like either a squeak of pain or something maybe heart related. I cant tell exactly. Does he mind you touching his tummy? or it is really tense? Does he squeak like this if you were to touch his tummy?

x.

I live in Connecticut, USA. I've already searched for a few others but I've only found a few out of state. I'm about to call the emergency vet to see if they have someone on staff that knows about guinea pigs and could take a look at him.

Yup, he's eating and pooping like normal. His stomach feels normal and squishy, and he doesn't squeak at all. I've felt him all over and nothing seems to cause him pain. Can a heart problem just come out from nowhere? He's never acted like this before.
