OK because I am getting so sad reading of health problems with young piggies - please tell me of all your healthy happy oldies! I haven't any at the moment as my current oldest is only six - but I'll bet there are some happy pensioners on here?

Mine are all middle-aged to older... They are all 4+ and we've had lots of them around 5 in the past. We've decided that we want to keep having older boys as they often struggle to get rehomed and we are happy to do all the extra care that oldies need. My OH is a geriatrics doctor so it's just like being at work ;)

:D Six years and four months is the oldest age I've ever got a piggie to reach. Two of mine reached that same age, and died at almost the same time of year. Strange.

Awwwww *hugs*

I hear stories of them living into their teens but have yet to get one past 5 1/2 years :(

I wonder if it is to do with the ways they are breed now as compared to 30 years ago etc....

:D A friend of mine had one that reached 8 years old.

What about that one in Guinea Pig magazine a while ago? He was said to be 14 years and more!

Our oldest current piggy Basil is 5 1/2 years old... Our oldest piggy was Wallace who was 7 when he passed over.. ( Our Avatar ). But both these piggies are dwarfed by a permanent resident at Hutches Rescue who is 11 and still going strong...

:D I'm not sure if I ever believed that the piggie in GPM was 14, but perhaps it was true after all!

They can get into their teens quite easily - or they used to - I'm beginning to wonder if I had a different sort of animal and they weren't guineas at all, come on folks there must be some teenage piggies on here - please?

We've only ever got to just about 6 and not much further but I know of piggies that are 7 and 8 and going strong. I think more than that is pretty unusual....

My current oldie is Sundae, who is 5.5 years. She is quite the success story- she has grappled with chronic health issues since she was about two- bladder stones and recurrent infections followed by a huge dental abscess right down into the muscles of her jaw. At diagnosis, I never thought she would live a normal lifespan, but here she is at 5.5. She is quite the little fighter! I'm very proud of her! My longest-lived pig thus far was my beloved Linney, who lived to be about 6 years and 3 months.

I'm not sure how many guinea pigs make it to the teens... I don't know any myself, though I do know a couple that have lived to be 7 or 8 and my vet says that he treated one that lived to be 9. Living into the teens is pretty rare for any small animal (I actually got guinea pigs as the 5-7 year expected lifespan is longer than many other little rodents.) I wonder if some of it is exaggeration over time... when you look back, time seems to blur. My son used to have a betta fish and I always seem to think that he lived for about five years, but when I do the math that really doesn't add up based on the ages of the kids... it was probably more like three years, but my mind keeps exaggerating!

I'm not 100% sure how old he was, but I adopted one and he could of been 7 or almost 7! He was quite frail and a little bit wobbly, but he was so sweet! x
Most of my other pigs have died at the age of 6, I've had one go at 4, 5 and 2. :'C

I've had two girls, both of whom died at the grand old age of eight. One, Molly, broke her leg when she was seven and recovered from an op to pin it and managed to live life normally afterwards (although she tended to bunny-hop when running, which was funny). The boys have all died younger -aged four or five - except the two that died following neutering (which was absolutely heartbreaking). No-one knows how old the two I adopted last year are, but they are getting on - one died a week ago and the other is well, and never been to the vets since I've had him (unlike his brother who had a season ticket) and currently sitting on my shoulder!

I don't have an old piggie yet but I have one piggie that has outlived all my other piggies.

He's been through quite a few friends. I got him in July 2011 and he was 11 weeks old at the time. Not sure what that makes his current age, any people good with maths happy to help me out? :)

He'd have been born some time in very late April or in May 2011 (depending when in July you got him) :) so he's now about 4 1/2 years.

Thank you!
I always wondered what his age was. I'm terrible at math.

I got him roughly 14-18th'ish I think it was

My oldest girly is Estee who is 8yrs 4months. Lola is coming up to 6 end of the year.

Piggy boy died 4.5yrs old earlier this year and Fly who passed away in August was almost 5. Left big holes in my heart.

My Fred I've had 6 years, I believe he was an adult when I got him so no idea of his actual age.

Wilma, I have had 6 years in December the owners told the rescue that she was a 1 year and a half so she's a good age. She was definitely fully grown when I adopted her and her sister. Her Sister died earlier this year.

mollie is my oldest piggy but she's only middle aged - 4years 4months approx. benjie is still young - around 1year 8months :)

my first two piggies, ches and maisie, both lived to age six. sadly little eddie was only 2years 7months when he passed.
